Bulldogs beat Cougs on wild pitch in 9th

 

A second wild pitch by Matt Bower (2-1) in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed Caleb Wood to score the winning run as the Gonzaga Bulldogs (23-26) slipped past the Washington State Cougars (22-25) 5-4 in nonconference action Tuesday night in Spokane.

Karl Myers (2-2) earned the victory with 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief.

Volleyball

Spokane’s Alexis Olgard is the on U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team 12-woman roster that will compete at the NORCECA World Championship Qualification Tournament being held Thursday through Sunday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Olgard, a Mead High and University of Southern California graduate, is one of three middle blockers on the team.

Awards and hirings

Idaho Vandals tennis coach Jeff Beaman was voted the ITA Mountain Region women’s coach of the year after leading his team to a 19-6 record and the program’s first Western Athletic Conference championship.

• North Idaho golfer Angus Montgomery was awarded the Phil Mickelson Award, which is presented to the most outstanding freshman in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I men’s golf.

Montgomery, along with teammates Chris Cremer, Tanner Martin and Michael Porter were named to the NJCAA Division I All-District team.

• Kelsey Stanley was named head coach of the North Idaho Cardinals volleyball team.
