Sasquatch men golf champions

Freshman Brady Calkins and sophomore Evan Omelia, who have been the two most consistent Sasquatch this spring, combined to lead the Community Colleges of Spokane men to the NWAACC golf championship at Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland.

Calkins claimed medalist honors with back-to-back rounds of 3-under-par 69s for 138 and Omelia shot 71-73, his 144 sharing second as CCS won its third title in four years, 577-599 over Southwestern Oregon.

It was Calkins’ third tournament win of the season. Omelia had four titles. Both earned All-NWAACC recognition.

All six Sasquatch finished in the top 20 of the 52-player field with sophomore Cole Lorenzo sixth at 146.

• CCS and Columbia Basin each had four among the low 16 women’s scorers, but it was the Hawks, led by medalist Hope Neidhold’s 158, who won the NWAACC championship at Horn Rapids.

CBC beat CCS 498-531.

Sophomore Brigid Rypien (North Central) led CCS and was sixth at 172 (87-85).

College baseball

Seattle (26-25) used a three-run third inning and held on for a 4-3 victory over Washington State in Bellevue, Washington, in the final nonleague game for the Cougars (23-28).

Patrick McGrath had a two-run pinch-hit single in the fourth and Cameron Frost a sacrifice fly in the ninth for WSU.

College track

Led by sophomore Jessica Mildes’ double in the women’s 10,000 and steeplechase, Community Colleges of Spokane won eight of 13 events on the first day of the NWAACC Championships at SFCC.

Mildes (Riverside) timed 39:26.37 in the 10,000 and 11:56.29 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Other CCS women’s winners: Brittany Dugger (East Valley), high jump, 5-foot-6, and Jacy Vining (Colville), javelin, 134-8.

CCS men winners: Jon Bennett (Republic), 10,000, 33:19.76; Colin Kubik, steeplechase, 9:54.30; Durran Bates (North Central), discus, 156 feet; and Shawn Buck (Central Valley), hammer, 157-11.

Prep golf

District 7 2A: Freshman Grace Frazier of Clarkston won the girls championship at Liberty Lake with a 169, a five-shot margin over Nicole Welter, a junior from Pullman.

Deer Park bested Clarkston for the team title.

Cheney, led by senior Steffi Cunningham’s 180 in third, qualified three for state. The low 10 girls and boys advance to state next Wednesday and Thursday in Tacoma.

• Joe Baldeck of Clarkston won the boys district championship with a 150 (75-75) and led the Bantams to the team title.

Ryan Brown of East Valley and Brian Martin of Pullman shared second at 151. Cody Culletto of Clarkston was fourth at 153.

District 7 1B/2B: Skyler Kersten, an eighth grader at St. George’s, claimed girls medalist honors at Liberty Lake, 184-188, over Almira/Coulee-Hartline sophomore Shaylee Felker.

• Hunter Weitze, a Colfax junior, bested Davenport freshman Palmer Guhlke 142-146 at MeadowWood for the boys district championship.

The top nine boys and girls qualify for state.
