Area roundup: Amanda Furrer mines silver with rifle

Amanda Furrer of Spokane, who shot her way to the 2012 London Olympics, continues to be on the world stage.

On Saturday, Furrer, 23, won a silver medal in the U.S. Championships at Fort Benning, Georgia, to claim a slot on the 2014 U.S. World Championships Women’s Three Position Rifle Team.

In her sights now is the International Shooting Sports Federation World Championships in Grenada, Spain, Sept. 6-10.  

Furrer began her shooting career at the Spokane Junior Rifle Club and graduated from Mead High School in 2009. She won a shooting scholarship at Ohio State where she trained before winning her 2012 U.S. Olympic Team berth.

Track and field

Community Colleges of Spokane’s Jessica Mildes piled up 40 points with four first-place finishes at the NWAACC Track and Field Championships at Spokane Falls CC.

Mildes won the 1,500-meter race, along with the 5,000, 10,000, and 3,000-meter steeplechase and was named the women’s Baden Athlete of the Year.

CCS women’s coach Jason Cash was named coach of the year.

• Whitworth sophomore Kerry Wright was named the West Region Field Athlete of the Year, while coach Toby Schwarz won his third straight West Region Men’s Coach of the Year. He has won the award 16 of his 18 seasons at the helm.

Wright broke the school record in the javelin three times this season, including a throw of 156 feet, 7 inches on the final weekend.

Rowing

The Washington State Cougars women earned an at-large berth in the NCAA Division I Rowing Championships in Indianapolis.

It marks the Cougars’ eighth overall appearance and fourth in the past five seasons in the event.

“It feels awesome,” said coach Jane LaRiviere. “It was really a nail-biter (making the field of 22).”
