Watson takes share of Senior PGA lead

Golf: Tom Watson shot a 3-under 68 on Friday for a share of the lead in the Senior PGA Championship with fellow Hall of Famers Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie and three other players.

The 64-year-old Watson had five birdies and a double bogey – on the par-4 12th – to reach 4-under 138 after two rounds at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Mich.

Langer also had a 68, and Montgomerie shot 69 to join Watson, Bart Bryant, Steen Tinning and Kiyoshi Murota atop the leaderboard. Bryant shot 67, Tinning 66, and Murota 65.

• PGA Tour rookie Garnett out front at Colonial: PGA Tour rookie Brice Garnett opened with an eagle on way to a 4-under 66 and the second-round lead at Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas.

At 7-under 133, Garnett had a one-stroke lead over Robert Streb and Chris Stroud, who made five putts from more than 20 feet in a 64. Streb shot 68.

Adam Scott, playing as No. 1 in the world for the first time, shot a 68 to get to 1 under. He has made the cut his last 34 PGA Tour events, the longest active streak.

Matt Kuchar, ranked No. 4 in the world, missed the cut by a stroke, shooting 72-70.

Chris Williams (Moscow, Idaho) shot a 71 for a 146 total, but missed the cut.

• Matthew goes on birdie binge: Catriona Matthew remained atop the Airbus LPGA Classic leaderboard, birdieing four of the last seven holes to take a one-stroke advantage over Charley Hull into the weekend.

The 44-year-old Matthew had a 5-under 67 to reach 13-under 131 on the Crossings Course in Mobile, Ala. The 18-year-old Hull also shot 67.

Matthew had six birdies and a bogey – on the par-4 ninth – in her afternoon round. The Scot won the last of her four LPGA Tour titles in 2011.

Hull also dropped a stroke on No. 9, the final hole of her morning round. The English player birdied Nos. 6-8 and had five birdies in a seven-hole stretch before closing with her lone bogey of the week.

Kim Welch (former Washington State) shot a 74 for a 145 total, but missed the cut.

• Duke wins sixth NCAA women’s golf title: Duke held off Southern California by two strokes for its sixth NCAA women’s golf title, and the Trojans’ Doris Chen took the individual championship.

Duke, six strokes ahead of Southern California entering the final round, had a 6-under 274 total at Tulsa Country Club to finish at 10-over 1,130. The Trojans, the winner last year, shot 10-under 270.

Duke coach Dan Brooks also led the Blue Devils to titles in 1999, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007. The hail-shortened 1999 event also was played at Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

Chen closed with a 3-under 67 for a two-stroke victory over Duke’s Celine Boutier. Chen finished at 6-under 274. Boutier, tied with Chen for the third-round lead, shot 69.

UCLA was third at 25 over, followed by Oklahoma at 27 over and Arizona State at 30 over.

Washington finished 17th, with a four-day total of 1,167 strokes, 47 over par.

• No. 8 Washington’s start delayed due to rain: The first day of the men’s NCAA Championships never got started for No. 8 Washington. Heavy rains in Hutchinson, Kansas, caused a series of delays.

Only the teams with early tee times were able to finish a few holes.

Puig to face Soler-Espinosa

Tennis: Monica Puig of Puerto Rico and Silvia Soler-Espinosa of Spain will play for a first WTA title when they meet in the Strasbourg International final after both defeated American players in Strasbourg, France.

The 20-year-old Puig beat Madison Keys 7-5, 6-3 in the second semifinal after qualifier Soler-Espinosa edged Christina McHale 5-7, 7-6 (7), 6-3 in a match which lasted 2 hours, 46 minutes, 3 seconds.

• Gulbis to meet Delbonis in Nice final: Second-seeded Ernests Gulbis will meet Federico Delbonis in the Open de Nice final after brushing aside defending champion Albert Montanes in Nice, France.

Gulbis of Latvia dropped just one point on his first serve on his way to a 6-0, 6-3 victory over the Spaniard.

• Pliskova, Bouchard to contest Nuremburg Cup final: Second-seeded Eugenie Bouchard of Canada will play Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic for the Nuremberg Cup title in Nuremberg, Germany.

Bouchard defeated Karin Knapp of Italy 6-4, 6-3 and Pliskova upset fourth-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Canola wins 13th stage; Uran in lead

Cycling: Marco Canola of Italy won the 13th stage of the Giro d’Italia for his first victory in a Grand Tour, while Colombian Rigoberto Uran retained the overall lead in Rivarolo Canavese, Italy.

Canola edged out Jackson Rodriguez and Angelo Tulik in a sprint at the end of the mainly flat, 98-mile leg from Fossano to Rivarolo Canavese.
