“I’m an analog man in a digital world,” said Ruben Marcilla, in his 25th season as a painter who creates the outfield signs at Avista Stadium. From the back of his beat-up Subaru wagon (pictured below), he prepares to paint an ad in right field.

To paint a large sign, Ruben Marcilla uses an old classroom-style overhead projector at night to trace an outline of the sign’s graphic elements. He then hand-paints the ad during the day.
