G-Prep places fifth in its category at Destination Imagination global competition
Gonzaga Prep’s Destination Imagination team placed fifth in their category at the global finals last week in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The team competed in Going to Extremes, secondary level, creating an eight-minute musical about surviving underground featuring a metallic armadillo.
The team members are Kassy Schrader, Bailey Osborne, Mitch Kilayko, Marina Marsalis, Drake Zielske and Ashley Castleman. G-Prep English teacher Mike Carroll is the team manager.
A team from St. Aloysius School also competed. More than 1,412 teams with nearly 8,000 students competed at the finals.
LC closes year with ‘Closing Night’
Lewis and Clark High School’s Tiger Drama ends the season with “Closing Night” in LC’s auditorium at 7 p.m. today.
The production includes one-acts, musical solos, and monologues.

Core curriculum to be spelled out
Spokane Public Schools is hosting an informational meeting about Core Knowledge curriculum at Longfellow Elementary School, 800 E. Providence Ave., at 3 p.m. today.
Longfellow and Balboa elementaries will use the program for their English language arts curriculum schoolwide starting in the fall, beginning the three- to five-year process of becoming a Core Knowledge school. The grade-by-grade curriculum blends reading and writing with history, geography, visual arts, music and science, and helps students to think critically.

The Spokane Public Schools Human Growth and Development advisory committee is looking for two new alternate members. The members review the Human Growth and Development materials and curriculum updates.
People interested in applying must be of voting age and live within the boundaries of the school district. The positions are not open to district employees or employees’ relatives.

Hutton remodel begins next week
Hutton Elementary School will kick off its construction project with a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m.
Remodeling is scheduled to be completed in August 2015. The project was approved when Spokane residents passed the 2009 school bond and included rebuilding or modernizations of Jefferson and Westview elementary schools, a new gymnasium at Salk Middle School, modernization of Ferris High School and an addition to North Central High Schools
The district wide plan, totaling $332 million also funded playground and field improvements and safety, security and technology updates at all schools in the district.
