Area roundup: NIC promotes Corey Symons to men’s basketball head coach

North Idaho College named longtime assistant Corey Symons as its men’s basketball coach, the school announced Thursday.

Symons, the team’s assistant coach the past 10 years, replaces Jared Phay, who left for the same job at College of Southern Idaho earlier this month.

Track and field

Eastern Washington’s Emma Murillo earned a berth in the NCAA Championships in javelin and Idaho’s Matt Sullivan qualified in the pole vault during the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds on Thursday in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Murillo, the Big Sky champion, finished 10th and earned a trip to Eugene next month. Sullivan finished eighth.

The Vandals’ Ben Ayesu-Attah finished fourth in his 400-meters heat, qualifying him for today’s semifinals.

Six Washington State competitors advanced to the semifinals – Jesse Jorgenson (800 meters), Jacob Sealby (400 meters), Erin Allen (400-meter hurdles), Abby Regan (800 meters), Courtney Zalud (800 meters) and Ruby Roberts (1500 meters).

Rowing

Washington State sophomore Nicole Hare has been named to the Pac-12 All-Conference Team. Hare’s varsity eight crew is ranked 14th in the country heading into this week’s NCAA Championships.
