Don’t Miss: Event emphasizes fun for fathers and sons

The HUB Sports Center’s Dads and Dudes event offers sports and other activities for fathers – or uncles or grandfathers – and sons. The photo shows participants at the 2013 event in Liberty Lake.

Dads and Dudes night Saturday at the HUB Sports Center is as simple as it sounds, said Phil Champlin, the center’s executive director.

“It’s a fun night for fathers and sons to come and have a good time together and make some good memories,” he said.

Uncles, grandfathers, Big Brothers and other father figures also are welcome.

Sports is a major theme at the three-hour event.

Area coaches and pros will lead basketball and football drills. A pickleball court will be open for play, with players on hand to teach the game. Others will lead golf and martial arts demonstrations.

Dads and dudes also can work on “build projects” donated by a home-improvement store, and bounce houses will be open for jumping.

Kids can win door prizes from local sports teams, recreational outlets and other businesses.

As the father of a girl, Champlin said, he enjoys a good daddy-daughter dance.

But, as the father of two boys, he noticed a lack of similar events solely for dads and sons. Dads and Dudes was born. This is its third year.

“I could barely keep up with my boys last year, going from event to event,” Champlin said.
