Suspended The NFL has suspended Arizona Cardinals inside linebacker Daryl Washington for one year for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. . Washington, in a statement released by his agent, says the penalty was for marijuana, and that he takes responsibility for the violation. Considered among the best at his position, Washington was suspended the first four games of last season for violating the substance abuse policy.

• New York Giants safety Will Hill was suspended for six games by the NFL for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Hill has failed three drug tests since 2012. The Giants are expected to release Hill when his suspension ends.

Released The New York Giants released quarterback Josh Freeman, five weeks after signing him. Freeman’s stock has plummeted since beginning last season as Tampa Bay’s starting quarterback. He was then cut by Tampa Bay, signed with Minnesota and started one game.

Arrested Oklahoma State running back Devon Thomas was jailed on felony complaints of armed robbery and shooting with intent to kill as investigators determined whether he fired a gun in a heist on Tuesday. Police in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, said Thomas and three others knew the alleged victim was known to possess and distribute various drugs, so they lured him to a meeting. The victim stated in the police report that Thomas was armed with a handgun and robbed him at gunpoint. They took the victim’s shoes, money, clothing and marijuana, the report said. As the victim was leaving, one of the suspects fired at least one round into the victim’s vehicle, which entered the rear windshield, nicked the driver’s headrest and narrowly missed the man’s head.

Denied The Texas Supreme Court has denied Lance Armstrong’s request to block Dallas company SCA Promotions’ attempts to recover about $12 million in performance bonuses it paid the cyclist during his career.
