Book Notes: Lennon lands at Auntie’s on Saturday

Lennon

Writer and composer J. Robert Lennon is releasing his second short story collection, “See You in Paradise,” on Tuesday. On Saturday, he’ll read from the book during a visit to Auntie’s Bookstore.

Lennon, whose shorter works have been featured in “Best American Short Stories,” “Best American Nonrequired Reading,” Granta, the Paris Review, teaches writing at Cornell University. He also has published seven novels, and his story “The Rememberer” served as the basis for “Unforgettable,” which ran for two seasons on CBS.

Lennon’s talk will begin at 7 p.m. at Auntie’s, 402 W. Main Ave. Call the store at (509) 838-0206 for details.

Doctor and writer

Novelist Carol Cassella, a two-time finalist for the Washington State Book Award, will be at Auntie’s on Tuesday reading from her latest, “Gemini.” As in her previous two novels – “Oxygen” and “Healer” – Cassella uses her day job as a practicing physician to inform her story. “Gemini” centers on a doctor who battles to keep “Jane Doe” alive while trying to discover her true identity. Her reading will begin at 7 p.m.

Return of the Beagle

Peter S. Beagle, author of fantasy classic “The Last Unicorn,” will return to Spokane to discuss and sign copies of the book on Thursday.

The event precedes a screening of the 1982 animated version of the film directed by Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr., of “Rudolph, the Red-Nose Reindeer” fame.

The festivities will be at Wandermere Village Center Cinemas, 12622 N. Division St. The pre-show signing begins at 5:30 p.m., and the film begins at 6. Admission is $10; call (509) 232-7727 for more information.
