BootSlam - All ages performance poetry competition organized by Spokane Poetry Slam. Poets will have three minutes per round to perform their original work, without the aid of costumes, props or musical accompaniment. Five audience judges, chosen at random, score the work, and the poet with the highest score after two rounds wins the $50 grand prize. Author Carol Cassella - Reading, discussion and signing with Cassella, a practicing physician and best-selling author of “Oxygen” and “Healer.” Both novels were Indie Next Picks and finalists for the Washington State Book Award in fiction. Her newest book, “Gemini,” is about a physician who battles to keep her “Jane Doe” patient alive and becomes involved in the search to discover her identity and family. Spokane Authors and Self-Publishers - Monthly meeting with guest Beth Camp, author of “Standing Stones” and “Years of Stone,” and a quarterfinalist in Amazon’s 2014 Breakthrough Novel competition. Inside Story 2014 - Learn the “story behind the story” of 2014 children’s and young adult book releases from Inland Northwest members of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. In a discussion moderated by children’s literature specialist Marilyn Carpenter, the authors will share anecdotes, insights and little known facts that will be of special interest to teachers, librarians, booksellers and parents. Author D. J. Atwood - Book signing of his debut novel, “Lady of the Island,” tells a gripping tale of love and crime. Mixology Book Release Cocktail Party - “Mixology: The Art of Classic Cocktails,” a project by Sheila Evans, celebrates mixing drinks and mixing paint in equal parts. From Aviation to Whiskey Sour, each one of a series of 18 still life paintings represents a different vintage drink. The paintings, accompanied by recipes, appear in a new book written and published by the artist. The paintings will hang throughout Mizuna’s bar and new banquet space during the First Friday event. Yellow Medicine Review Launch - The launch of the fall issue of the Yellow Medicine Review: A Journal of Indigenous Literature, Art and Thought.
