Area roundup: EWU’s soccer season ends with loss in Big Sky tournament

The Eastern Washington women’s soccer team had its season come to a close with a 3-2 loss to Northern Arizona Thursday in the first round of the Big Sky Conference tournament in Missoula.

The Lumberjacks scored two first-half goals and Demi Schmieder’s goal early in the second-half gave Northern Arizona a 3-1 lead. Savannah Hoekstra and Cassie Black scored goals for the Eagles.

Volleyball

Mary-Kate Marshall had 12 kills and 17 digs and Oregon State (16-8, 6-7) beat Washington State (10-15, 1-12) in a Pac-12 match in Pullman. Scores were 25-20, 18-25, 25-20 and 27-25.

• Gonzaga (14-9, 5-7) charged back after dropping the first two sets, but fell in five sets to Santa Clara (19-7, 9-4) in a West Coast Conference match in Spokane. Scores were 25-19, 28-26, 21-25, 22-25 and 15-12.

• Jessica Hastriter and Alyssa Schultz combined for 25 kills and Idaho (14-11, 10-3) stormed back to beat Southern Utah (13-12, 5-8) in a Big Sky match in Cedar City, Utah. Scores were 27-25, 19-25, 21-25, 25-21 and 15-13.

• Janae Vander Ploeg led four players in double figures with 13 kills and Northern Arizona (18-6, 9-4) beat Eastern Washington (9-17, 5-8) in a Big Sky match in Flagstaff, Arizona. Scores were 25-23, 19-25, 25-16 and 25-15.

Baseball

After an impressive season last summer, Spokane Indians second baseman Seth Spivey was named to the Texas Rangers Organizational All-Star team.
