College football around the region

4: Records: No. 18 UCLA (7-2, 4-2 Pac-12), Washington (6-3, 2-3)

Kickoff: 3:30 p.m., Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego

Records: Idaho (1-7), San Diego State (4-4)

TV/Radio: Root Sports/1080 and 1280-AM

Overview: The Vandals have lost 20 straight road games, and the “process” coach Paul Petrino keeps talking about doesn’t get any easier against one of the nation’s top defenses – tops in the Mountain West Conference, 20th nationally in points allowed and 23rd in total yardage. And this with the Vandals coming off a turnover nightmare (eight of them) against Arkansas State and back to a tossup at quarterback. Season-long starter Matt Linehan just had his worst game and backup Chad Chalich has been capable, and sometimes more, in relief. The Idaho defense will have to contend with running back Donnel Pumphrey, already over 1,000 yards for the season. It may be a November nonconference game, but the Aztecs need it badly if they want to extend their bowl string to five, as their final three opponents are 15-9 on the season.

Pirates at Lutes

Kickoff: 1 p.m., Sparks Stadium, Puyallup

Records: Whitworth (6-3, 4-2 Northwest Conference), Pacific Lutheran (5-2, 3-2)

Radio: 1230-AM

Overview: Already having secured winning overall and conference records, the Pirates will be playing for a final win for their 15 seniors. To do that, Whitworth must beat a team that has beaten the Pirates for four straight seasons, though the 2010 win by the Lutes ended a six-game losing streak to the Pirates. Whitworth will be led for the last time by senior quarterback Bryan Peterson, who set numerous school records and ranks in the top 10 in the nation in five offensive categories. He leads all quarterbacks in Division III with an average of 31.6 completions per game. Overall, Peterson has completed 65 percent of his passes for 2,439 yards with 24 TDs and eight interceptions. The Pirates will be facing a Pacific Lutheran offense that averages 449.2 yards per game with 233.6 yards on the ground and 215.6 yards through the air.
