Police investigate bomb-like device found in parking lot

Spokane police briefly shut down Market Street after a device that appeared to be a bomb was discovered in a McDonald’s parking lot in northeast Spokane.

Spokane police Capt. Eric Olsen said the object was discovered about 5 p.m. The restaurant, at 3416 N. Market St., was closed and workers “sheltered in place,” Olsen said. The department’s Explosives Disposal Unit “rendered it safe” about 7:15 p.m. and determined the device was not explosive, Olsen said.

Olsen said the object, however, was made to look like a bomb and was not hidden.

A criminal investigation will be opened in hopes of finding the person who placed the object in the parking lot.

Police arrest suspect in CdA, other bank robberies

A man accused of robbing bank branches in Idaho and Utah, including a Coeur d’Alene credit union last month, is behind bars after allegedly attempting a repeat heist near Pocatello last weekend.

Randy T. Jordan, 44, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Idaho last week on two counts of bank robbery. Coeur d’Alene police and the FBI released surveillance footage of the alleged robbery that occurred about 1:45 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Global Credit Union branch at 320 E. Neider Ave. Witnesses said a man, who authorities believe is Jordan, displayed a gun and left the bank with $1,244 in cash. In a previous robbery in July, police say Jordan made off with more than $8,000 from an Idaho State University Credit Union location in Chubbuck, north of Pocatello.

Authorities there told the Idaho State Journal that Jordan returned Nov. 1 to that Chubbuck branch, four days after the grand jury indicted him for the previous charges. He was taken into custody at a nearby restaurant without incident, though authorities say a pipe bomb was found in his car.

Jordan also faces bank robbery allegations in Utah, the Idaho State Journal reports.
