Volleyball: Balanced CV wins 4A regional title

Central Valley added another feather in its cap Saturday, capturing its first 4A regional volleyball title with a 25-18, 18-25, 25-14, 25-27, 15-13 victory over host Richland in the 4A regional title match.

The Bears (26-1-1), who also won their first Greater Spokane League and District 8 titles this fall, earned a repeat trip to the State 4A tournament, which begins Friday at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey.

The Bears won the regional title with balance, as Jade Rockwood, Kazlyn Roullier, Sasha Montgomery and Keann White combined for 53 kills. Kara Nitteberg added 24 digs.

Valley neighbor University will join CV at the tournament as the Titans (27-4) first eliminated Pasco 3-1 before stopping Richland 3-1 to earn the No. 2 seed.

U-Hi’s Alex Douglas and Sydney Schlect had 11 kills apiece against Pasco. Douglas accounted for 16 kills and 29 assists, and Jacey Schuh added 16 digs in the state-qualifying win. The Titans competed at the State 3A tournament last year.

2A regional

Jordan Phelan and Shalyn Stack had 18 kills apiece as East Valley earned a return trip to the State 2A tournament by rallying past visiting East Valley (Yakima) 16-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-8.

Emily Sior added 37 assists and three aces and Brooklynn Juris had 16 digs for the Knights, the Great Northern League and District 7 champions who earned the No. 3 seed to state, which begins Friday at Pierce College in Lakewood.

Ellensburg earned the No. 2 seed with a 3-1 win over Pullman. Chelsea Bone had 18 assists, 15 digs and two aces for Pullman.

Selah had already captured the No. 1 seed.

District 7 1A

Jessica Schmautz had 24 kills and Shannon Gallagher added 44 assists as Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) earned its 14th state appearance in the last 17 years with a 22-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-17 win over host Freeman in the championship match.

Freeman qualified for its fifth state trip in six years with a 3-0 sweep of Colville as Alisha Straw and Hayley Damon had 11 kills apiece.

State begins Friday at Yakima’s SunDome.

2B regional

Olivia Mellor and Amara Huber had 12 kills apiece, and Kori Goodwin added 28 assists as defending state champion Colfax (28-2) defeated Northwest Christian 25-13, 15-16, 25-16 in the title match at Cheney High.

The 11-time champion Bulldogs qualified for their 26th state tourney in 27 seasons.

Rachel Bozlee had 12 digs for NWC, which advances as the No. 2 seed to state, starting Friday at Yakima’s SunDome. The Crusaders return to state after a one-year hiatus.

Reardan took the No. 3 seed to state when Kamille Landford had 17 kills in a 3-2 win over Dayton.

Davenport, fourth at state last year, advances as the No. 4 seed. Sarah Vesneske had 24 assists and three aces in a 3-0 state-qualifying win over Tri-Cities Prep.

District 7 1B

Jordyn Tanke had 10 kills, 16 digs and seven blocks as Odessa-Harrington rallied for an 8-25, 25-20, 29-27, 25-16 win over Almira/Coulee-Hartline in the championship match at Northwest Christian.

Berlyn Hunt had 10 kills for ACH.

Both teams return to the state tournament at Yakima’s SunDome. The Warriors placed sixth last season and O-H finished 1-2.

Haley McCrae had 24 assists and Demi Vaughn added four aces as Republic earned the No. 3 seed with a 3-1 win over Valley Christian.

District 9 1B

Pomeroy (22-3) swept Oakesdale 3-0 in the title match at Colfax, earning the No. 1 seed to state at the SunDome.

Rachel Gfeller had 18 kills, five blocks and three aces as St. John-Endicott took the No. 2 seed with a 3-2 win over Oakesdale.
