Street levy projects to start next year

Plans are underway to start fixing Spokane streets under a tax measure that won overwhelming voter approval Tuesday.

The street measure passed with a 77 percent yes vote. It will provide about $5 million of work annually through 2034.

Work next year will continue on the Monroe and Lincoln street corridors. The newly approved street levy money will be used to enhance an already planned project on the two streets from Main Avenue downtown to Eighth Avenue on the South Hill.

The levy will help pay for additional sidewalks, pedestrian lighting, landscaping, utilities and a stormwater infiltration facility.

That is on top of the previously approved work to rebuild the pavement and replace street trees.

Another big project next year will be on Thor and Ray streets from Third to 29th avenues as well as the crossover on Hartson Avenue between Thor and Freya.

The city already was planning to fix pavement problems, but the levy will add facilities for handicapped pedestrians and increase the amount of pavement work.

On Indiana Avenue, pavement will be replaced next year from Division to Hamilton streets, including water main replacement, stormwater facilities, dry wells and piping.

Rowan Street from Driscoll Boulevard to Monroe Street will see pavement replacement, bike signs and sidewalk replacement next year.

On Havana Street, work from 37th to 57th avenues will involve new pavement, drainage, sidewalks, a bike lane and street trees. The county is undertaking its portion of the project in the unincorporated part of the street.

Utility work is financed from utility funds but is part of the city’s strategy to pair street projects with other improvements.

Roads reopening

High Drive from 29th Avenue to Bernard Street has reopened following reconstruction. Monroe Street from Eighth to 17th avenues also was scheduled to reopen.

Work on Addison Street from Columbia to Dalke avenues and on adjacent streets was nearing completion as well.

Valley closures

In Spokane Valley, Fourth Avenue from Blake to McDonald roads is closed through Nov. 26 for utility work.

The intersection of Seventh Avenue and Eastern Road will be closed through 5 p.m. Thursday.

Preparations continue for demolition of the southbound Spokane River bridge on Sullivan Road. Traffic restrictions are in effect on the northbound bridge.

Storm drain improvements will cause traffic restrictions on Bowdish Road north of 24th Avenue; on Adams Road from Wellesley to Trent avenues; and on Wellesley from Moore to Sullivan roads from Wednesday through Nov. 25 for storm drain work.

Highway work

On state highways, the northbound lane of the Newport Highway north of Nevada Street will have restrictions this week so a developer can pave approaches to an RV park.

Lane restrictions also are possible on Interstate 90 west of the Cheney exit for pavement patching.

I-90 from Division to Barker Road also may see lane restrictions as crews clean median drains.
