Died Longtime manager and star shortstop Alvin Dark has died in Easley, South Carolina. He was 92. Dark, the 1948 major league Rookie of the Year and a three-time All-Star, played on three World Series teams, including the 1954 champion New York Giants, and managed the 1974 Oakland Athletics to the crown.

Announced The San Diego Padres have won the bidding for rights to South Korean pitcher Kwang Hyun Kim with a $2 million offer and have 30 days to reach a deal with the 26-year-old left-hander. Kim was put up for bid by the SK Wyverns of the Korea Baseball Organization.

• A Brazilian hospital says Pele has successfully undergone a surgical procedure to remove kidney stones. Pele was hospitalized Wednesday evening after cancelling his appearance at an event at the Pele Museum in the city of Santos.

Signed Two-time world gymnastics all-around champion Simone Biles has signed a national letter of intent to attend UCLA, although she has deferred enrollment until after the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The 17-year-old from Spring, Texas, became the first woman in 40 years to win four gold medals at a single world meet earlier this year, when she won the team, all-around, balance beam and floor exercise titles.

Hired Former MLS player and current Seattle Sounders assistant coach Ezra Hendrickson has been named the first head coach of Sounders 2, the club’s USL PRO franchise that will begin play in 2015. Hendrickson has been an assistant to Sounders coach Sigi Schmid since the club’s inception in 2009. He spent 14 seasons playing professionally, including 12 in MLS.

Agreed Defender Robbie Rogers has agreed to a multiyear contract extension with the L.A. Galaxy. Rogers started 15 games and had two assists as a left back.

Purchased The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe is buying the Emerald Downs thoroughbred horse racing track in Auburn. The tribe already owns the land on which the track sits and says it’s part of the tribe’s historical homeland and an important part of its economic development program.

Expanded The NBA is expanding the All-Star ballot to include all players, and pushing back the start of voting so fans can better consider their choices. Voting for the Feb. 15 game will begin Dec. 11 on NBA.com and will for the first time feature every player in the league, rather than just 60 per conference as on the previous ballot.
