In brief: Louisville outlasts Minnesota in Armed Forces Classic

Men’s basketball: Montrezl Harrell had 30 points and Terry Rozier added 18 to help No. 8 Louisville beat Minnesota 81-68 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

The Armed Forces Classic, played at the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, also pitted father against son as Louisville coach Rick Pitino improved to 2-0 against son Richard, coach of the Golden Gophers.

Graham leads Kansas past Santa Barbara Freshman Devonte’ Graham scored 14 points off the bench, Perry Ellis had 13 points and 10 rebounds and No. 5 Kansas beat UC Santa Barbara 69-59 in a sloppy opener in Lawrence, Kansas.

James Madison women upset UCLA

Women’s basketball: James Madison’s Precious Hall scored 25 points and finished perfect from the free-throw line to lead the Dukes to a 91-87 upset of No. 23 UCLA in Harrisonburg, Va.

The Bruins led 75-73 with 8 seconds left in regulation before Hall made two free throws to send it into overtime. She made two more free throws with 6 seconds left to extend the lead to 91-87.

Walker leads Texas A&M over DePaul Courtney Walker scored 26 points to lead No. 5 Texas A&M to a 76-68 victory over No. 18 DePaul in the season opener for both teams in Chicago.

The Aggies secured the win closing the game on a 10-2 run, including going 8 for 8 from the free-throw line.

UNC beats Howard in Hatchell’s return: Allisha Gray scored 19 points to help No. 13 North Carolina beat Howard 83-49 in Chapel Hill, N.C., giving Hall of Fame coach Sylvia Hatchell a successful return to the bench after missing last season while battling leukemia.

James helps Cavaliers edge Celtics 122-121

NBA: LeBron James scored a season-high 41 points, and the Cleveland Cavaliers overcame a 19-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Boston Celtics 122-121 in Boston.

Millsap, Horford push Hawks past Heat: Paul Millsap and Al Horford each scored 19 points to help the Atlanta Hawks get their fourth straight win, beating the visiting Miami Heat 114-103.

With star guard Dwyane Wade hobbled by a strained left hamstring and unable to play, the Heat never led and trailed by 19 late in the fourth quarter.

Dupuis scores twice as Penguins beat Leafs

NHL: Pascal Dupuis netted two goals, and Sidney Crosby reclaimed sole possession of the NHL scoring lead with an assist in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 2-1 win over host Toronto Maple Leafs.

Franzen, Tatar lift Red Wings over Blackhawks: Johan Franzen and Tomas Tatar both scored during Detroit’s dominant second period, and the Red Wings beat the visiting Chicago Blackhawks 4-1.

Kings defenseman Martinez undergoes finger surgery: Alec Martinez has undergone finger surgery, leaving the Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings short of healthy defensemen again.

Martinez was hurt blocking a shot midway through a 2-0 loss to Dallas on Thursday.

Burnett back with Pirates for one year

Baseball: A.J. Burnett agreed to an $8.5 million, one-year contract to rejoin the Pittsburgh Pirates – $4.25 million less than the player option he turned down with Philadelphia.

A 37-year-old right-hander, Burnett went 26-21 with a 3.41 ERA for Pittsburgh in 2012-13, helping the Pirates return to the postseason in 2013 following a 21-year drought.

Yanagita leads Japan over MLB All-Stars 8-4: Yanagita drove in four runs from the leadoff spot, Hisashi Iwakuma was hit hard and Japan beat the Major League Baseball All-Stars 8-4 in Tokyo to take a 2-0 lead in their five-game series.

Putnam leads PGA Tour’s OHL Classic

Golf: Michael Putnam birdied five of the first eight holes and finished with a 7-under 64 to take the lead in the PGA Tour’s OHL Classic in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.

Putnam had a 12-under 130 total, playing the first 36 holes without a bogey on Mayakoba’s El Camaleon course. Spokane’s Alex Prugh missed the cut.

Christina Kim leads Lorena Ochoa Invitational: Christina Kim shot a 3-under 69 in Mexico City to maintain a one-stroke lead in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational.

Kim birdied the par-3 16th to take the outright lead and parred the final two holes at tree-lined Club de Golf Mexico. She had a 10-under 134 total.

• Coston, Esposito share Senior PGA Pro lead: Jeff Coston shot a 6-under 66 for a share of the lead with Frank Esposito Jr. in the Senior PGA Professional National Championship in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

The 59-year-old Coston, a PGA teaching professional at Semiahmoo in Blaine, Washington, had eight birdies and two bogeys on PGA Golf Club’s Wanamaker Course to match Esposito at 10-under 134. Coston is a three-time champion of Spokane’s Rosauers Open Invitational.

Gordon wins pole for season finale

NASCAR: Jeff Gordon has bounced back from last week’s heartbreaking elimination from the championship race by winning the pole for Sunday’s season finale.

Gordon turned a lap at 180.747 mph in Homestead, Florida, qualifying to earn the top starting spot.

Crafton clinches NASCAR Truck Series championship: Matt Crafton made it back-to-back Truck Series championships, clinching the title with a ninth-place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida.

Djokovic earns year-end No. 1 rank

Miscellany: Novak Djokovic clinched another year-end No. 1 tennis ranking and a semifinals berth in the ATP Finals with a comfortable win over Tomas Berdych in London.

Berdych was dispatched 6-2, 6-2 in a group match, giving Djokovic an unassailable points lead over second-ranked Roger Federer. Djokovic will finish the season No. 1 for the third time in four years.

U.S. falters late in loss to Colombia in London: Teofilo “Teo” Gutierrez headed in a tiebreaking goal in the 87th minute, and Colombia rallied to beat the United States 2-1 in an exhibition at Craven Cottage.

Jozy Altidore converted a penalty kick in the 10th minute, his 25th international goal, after a hand ball against Colombia.

Third-ranked Colombia tied the score on a 61st-minute goal by Carlos Bacca, and the Americans allowed a goal from the 86th minute on for the third straight match.
