Roundup: Tanner Anderson races to win Nike Cross regional

North Central senior Tanner Anderson, a week removed from his State 3A cross country title, claimed first place at the Nike Cross Northwest regional meet Saturday at Eagle Island Cross Country Course in Boise, Idaho.

Anderson covered the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 54.6 seconds. His team, North Spokane Cross Country Club, secured the team title, narrowly edging the Central Oregon Track Club.

Anderson’s teammates, Andrew Vandine and Justin Janke, also fared well. Vandine was 18th in 17:04.6 and Janke was 21st in 17:07.4.

The Loyal Sons of Ireland, made up of Central Valley runners, took 14th place.

The meet served as a qualifier for the Nike Cross Nationals, which will be held Dec. 6 in Portland, Oregon.

Football

Prosser pulled away in the third quarter and dumped Clarkston 41-14 in the first round of the State 3A playoffs in Clarkston.

The Mustangs scored 20 unanswered points in the third quarter to bury the Bantams (9-2).

Clarkston quarterback A.J. Davis threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw three interceptions.

• Cusick (10-1) edged host Touchet 34-28 in the first round of the State 1B playoffs.

The Panthers will play Republic (10-1) next weekend in the quarterfinals.

Girls soccer

Jocelyn Cook-Cox, Kelsey Jones and Hannah Mitchell scored in the shootout and Lakeside edged Naches Valley 2-1 in a State 1A tournament quarterfinal game at Shoreline Stadium in Shoreline, Washington.

Naches Valley went ahead 1-0 after a first-half goal, but the Eagles’ Callie Best scored in the 78th minute to force an eventual shootout.

Lakeside (15-3) will play Klahowya Friday in Shoreline, with the winner claiming a spot in the title match.

• West Valley (13-5-1) was eliminated from the State 2A tournament after a 2-1 quarterfinal-loss to host Ephrata.

Boys soccer

Friday Harbor blanked Northwest Christian 3-0 in the first round of the State 1B/2B tournament in Mount Vernon, Washington.

Friday Harbor will play Waitsburg-Prescott Friday at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner, Washington. Waitsburg-Prescott advanced after beating St. George’s 2-0 on Friday.
