Snowy morning leads to 40 collisions, one fatality

Spokane’s first snowy morning of the season was a busy one for emergency responders, who received reports of at least 41 collisions Thursday morning, with one fatality and one serious injury. A fatal collision around 8:40 a.m. on State Route 2 near Deep Creek left the highway closed in both directions. Washington State Patrol troopers are investigating a collision between a semi-truck, which went off the roadway, and two passenger vehicles. Washington State Patrol spokesman Trooper Jeff Sevigney said the driver of one of the cars was killed, and the driver and passenger in the second car were not harmed. The semi-truck’s driver was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Sevigney said the collision appeared to have been caused by drivers going too fast for the snowy conditions. Detours are in place at the scene, and the Washington State Department of Transportation is directing traffic. Police spokeswoman Ofc. Teresa Fuller said a vehicle collided with a 10-year-old boy on Mission Street between Cook and Regal, closing the roadway for investigation. The boy was taken to the hospital with injuries initially thought to be life-threatening, but he is now expected to make a full recovery. The driver who hit him was cited for failure to yield at a crosswalk and speed too fast for conditions.
