G&T blog matters: WSU’s ‘Thursday Night Football,’ UI point guard Perrion Callandret’s confidence

Keith Harrington starred on Thursday Night Football again. That’s not unusual. But he did it in an unusual setting today.

Because of a suggestion to coach Mike Leach made by injured quarterback Connor Halliday during a recent phone call, the Cougars have practiced indoors all week to prepare for the unseasonably warm temperature they’ll play in this weekend.

Reporters were allowed to attend the first 15 minutes of practice, as well as Thursday Night Football, but the majority of practice was closed.

A source deep inside the program indicated that Peyton Bender’s pass of about 70 yards to Gabe Marks was the highlight.

Idaho point guards Perrion Callandret and Mike Scott, along with Idaho coach Don Verlin touched on the topic of confidence (after Idaho’s win over South Dakota State on Monday), something Callandret sorely lacked in his freshman campaign last season.

Callandret talked with some swagger after the win. Last year, he was a sparsely-used substitute off the bench after falling out of favor very early in the season. This season, he is the first guard coming off the bench and had the confidence of his coach to unload a 3-point shot that could’ve meant defeat had it not went in.

“That’s a big thing. Confidence is the biggest part of my game I feel like,” Callandret said. “Him (Verlin) having confidence to put me in at the end of the game, confidence to let me hit shots, it’s great. It helps me play.”

With the departure of Callandret’s brother, Glen Dean, Scott has taken Callandret under his wing.

“Me and Perrion talk all the time. I can tell by his tone that he has a lot of confidence in his game,” Scott said.
