Whitworth falls in NCAA soccer tournament

Christopher Newport University defeated Whitworth 3-2 in the third round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday in a match played in Gambier, Ohio.

The Captains (17-2-3) got the first two goals of the match before Karl Muelheims scored at 36:25 for the Pirates (19-3-4). The Captains added another goal at 51:44 before Colin Shockman cut the deficit back to one with a goal at 70:52.

Whitworth threatened to tie the match late with several crosses into box but the Captains held Whitworth to one shot attempt in the final 20 minutes.

The Pirates had a 19-10 advantage in shots and 8-5 in shots on goal but Captains goaltender Sam Lesko made several impressive saves, finishing with six.

• Washington made its final six shots in a nine-round shootout to beat Furman, 6-5 on penalty kicks, following a 0-0 draw in a second-round NCAA tournament match in Seattle.

The Huskies (12-5-2) will travel to play Michigan State in East Lansing next Sunday. The Paladins finished their season at 12-5-5.

Women’s soccer

The season ended for Washington (14-7-2) with a 1-0 loss to host Stanford (20-1-2) in the round of 16 of the NCAA tournament.

Volleyball

Blue Mountain swept CC Spokane in the title match of the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships played in Tacoma.

The Timberwolves won 25-11, 25-18, 25-20.

Spokane’s attack percentage was just .115 while Blue Mountain’s was .208.

Korrie Stephenson led the Sasquatch with 10 kills. Lizzy Ridley had 20 digs and Jacy Vining 16. Emily Russell and Madison Zinsli both had 15 digs.

• Washington (27-2, 16-2 Pac-12) swept Arizona State 25-19, 25-11, 25-19 in Seattle for the Huskies’ 31st consecutive home victory. Melanie Wade hit .909 with 10 kills. Krista Vansant had 15 kills on .481.

Baseball

Washington State lost to the Dominican Republic Navy 4-2 in the first game of the Cougars’ Dominican tour. Ector Sano’s three-run homer in the sixth was the big blow and capped a four-run rally that erased a 2-0 WSU lead. Reliever Jacob Schroeder took the loss. Ian Sagdal hit a two-run triple for WSU.
