Butler knocks off No. 5 North Carolina

COLLEGE MEN: Alex Barlow scored 17 points, Kelan Martin came off the bench to score 17 more and Butler hung on to upset No. 5 North Carolina 74-66 on Wednesday in the opening game of the Battle 4 Atlantis, in Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Roosevelt Jones scored 12 for the Bulldogs (4-0), who topped the Tar Heels (3-1) in an early-season tournament for the second time in as many meetings. Butler beat North Carolina at the Maui Invitational in 2012, blowing the game open in the first half of that meeting.

Bahamas native leads Oklahoma to upset win: Bahamas native Buddy Hield scored 24 points, Frank Booker added 11 and Oklahoma beat No. 22 UCLA 75-65 in the quarterfinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis, in Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Jordan Woodard added 10 points for the Sooners (3-1), who were 0-3 overall against UCLA (4-1).

Hield was born in Freeport and lived there until moving to Kansas as a high school junior.

Portland blazes to ninth straight win

NBA: Wesley Matthews scored a season-high 28 points, and the Trail Blazers defeated the Hornets 105-97 in Charlotte, for their ninth consecutive victory.

Matthews was 10 of 15 from the field and 6 of 9 from 3-point range as Portland improved to 7-0 against Eastern Conference teams.

Damian Lillard had 22 points, and Robin Lopez added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Cavs climb back to .500: LeBron James scored 29 points, Kevin Love added 21 and the Cleveland Cavaliers exacted a little revenge on Washington with a 113-87 win over the Wizards in Cleveland.

Five days after they were embarrassed in a 91-78 loss at Washington, the Cavs controlled this one from the start and got back to .500.

The four-time MVP, James called his team “fragile” during a recent four-game losing streak, and was energized from the start as he powered to the basket and imposed his will on the Wizards.

Curry shoots Warriors to victory: Stephen Curry had 28 points, including six 3-pointers, and Golden State rolled to its seventh consecutive win with a 111-96 win over Orlando, in Orlando, Florida.

Seven Warriors scored in double figures. Harrison Barnes had 16 points.

Popovich misses time: Coach Gregg Popovich will miss San Antonio’s game against the Indiana Pacers after undergoing what the team calls a minor medical procedure.

Assistant Ettore Messina will run the team in Popovich’s absence. Messina becomes the first European-born coach to run an NBA team in the regular season. Messina is in his first season with the Spurs after a successful international career.

Chattanooga upsets No. 4 Tennessee

COLLEGE WOMEN: Keiana Gilbert scored a career-high 27 points and made a critical block in the last minute as Chattanooga stunned No. 4 Tennessee 67-63, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

This marked the second straight time Tennessee has lost at Chattanooga’s McKenzie Arena. Chattanooga stunned Tennessee 80-71 two seasons ago to spoil the head coaching debut of Tennessee’s Holly Warlick.

Lightning beat former captain St. Louis

NHL: Ryan Callahan scored twice against his former team for the second time in 10 days, and Tampa Bay beat former Lightning captain Martin St. Louis and the New York Rangers 4-3 in Tampa, Florida.

St. Louis played in Tampa for the first time since requesting a trade and being dealt to the Rangers for Callahan last March in a rare swap of captains.

Tavares overtime goal lifts Islanders: John Tavares scored a power-play goal late in overtime to lift the New York Islanders to a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals in Uniondale, New York.

The Islanders have set a franchise record by winning 16 of their first 22 games.

McIlroy begins defense of Aussie title

GOLF: Rory McIlroy’s defense of his Australian Open title began with a 2-under-par 69 on a cool, overcast and often drizzly morning at The Australian Golf Club in Sydney.

McIlroy, winner of back-to-back majors this year at the British Open and the PGA Championship, began play on the back nine and made the turn at even-par after a birdie and a bogey. He birdied the first hole of his second nine, added another at the par-5 fifth, but made bogey on the seventh.

Arsenal advances for 15th straight season

SOCCER: Arsenal reached the knockout stage of the Champions League for the 15th straight season with a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, and Liverpool put itself in position to advance if it wins at home over Basel next month.
