CLEVELAND – The police officer who fatally shot a 12-year-old boy carrying a pellet gun fired within 1 1/2 to 2 seconds of pulling up in his cruiser, police said Wednesday. During those few moments, he ordered the youngster three times to put up his hands, they said.

The city released a surveillance video that shows the Saturday shooting of Tamir Rice, who was carrying an airsoft gun that shoots nonlethal plastic pellets.

“It is our belief that this situation could have been avoided and that Tamir should still be here with us,” the family said in a statement. The patrol officer who shot Tamir was identified Wednesday as Timothy Loehmann, a 26-year-old rookie.

MINNEAPOLIS – An 18-year-old Minnesota man accused of trying to travel to Syria to join fighters with the Islamic State group left a few inadvertent clues on Facebook but was able to hide weeks of planning from his parents, according to recently unsealed court documents.

Abdullahi Yusuf was released from jail Wednesday after his attorney noted he’d known for months he was being investigated but never fled. Yusuf was stopped by FBI agents at the Minneapolis airport in May while trying to leave the U.S., but he wasn’t arrested until Tuesday.

Yusuf is charged with one count of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.
