Area roundup: WSU’s Sang Lee captures first career title

Washington State senior Sang Lee tied for medalist honors to help the Cougars finish fourth at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate men’s golf tournament on Tuesday at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman.

Lee and California’s Chris Shaw both carded 6-under-par 204s over three rounds. It was Lee’s first career individual title.

The Cougars finished at 2-over 842 in a field that featured seven Pac-12 teams.

Oregon won a playoff with USC on the first hole after both teams finished with 6-under 834s.

Idaho finished eighth at 850.

Women’s golf

Kristin Strankman finished with a 6-over-par 222 over three rounds to tie for fifth place and guide the Idaho Vandals to a sixth-place showing at the Rose City Collegiate at Langdon Farms in Aurora, Oregon.

Leilanie Kim placed 11th for Idaho with a 224.

Cal State Fullerton (26-over 890) won the team title and had the medalist Tisha Alyn Abrea (1-under 215).

Eastern Washington finished 10th in the 13-team competition. Maddie Dodge (232, tied for 35th) and Taylor Crandall (233, tied for 37th) paced the Eagles.

Women’s soccer

Sarah Melvin scored two goals and the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch erupted for four second-half goals en route to a 5-1 win over the visiting Yakima Valley Yaks in NWAC play.

Jessica Geibel, Hannah Sanders and Lexi Miller also found the net for CC Spokane.

• The Treasure Valley Chukars scored three unanswered goals – with Brooke Thomas and Madison Johnson scoring 7 minutes apart in the first half – en route to a 3-1 victory over North Idaho in Coeur d’Alene.

Jaimee Hulst scored in the 15th minute for NIC, which lost for the first time this season.

Men’s soccer

Brady Ulen scored a pair of goals and Taylor Haman and Adam Talley added a goal apiece – all in an 8-minute span in the second half – to rally the North Idaho Cardinals to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Treasure Valley Chukars.

Volleyball

Greater Spokane League: Sydney Schlect had 10 kills, Jacey Schuh totaled 14 digs and Alex Douglas chipped in with 15 assists and three aces to lead the University Titans to a 3-0 win over the visiting Ferris Saxons to remain unbeaten in league play. … Sydney Underwood tallied eight kills and 12 digs to spark the visiting Lewis and Clark Tigers to a 3-0 win over the Shadle Park Highlanders. … Patience O’Neal had seven kills and two aces and Sophie West added two aces and three blocks to send the visiting Gonzaga Prep Bullpups to a 3-0 win over the Rogers Pirates. … Kazlyn Roullier notched eight kills, Kara Nitteberg had nine digs and Jade Rockwood delivered 14 assists to help the Central Valley Bears cruise to a 3-0 win over the visiting Mt. Spokane Wildcats and keep pace with University atop the standings. … Mead’s match at North Central was postponed until next Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Great Northern League: Chelsea Bone tallied 19 assists and five aces to power the Pullman Greyhounds to a 3-0 win over the visiting West Valley Eagles. Erin Higbie had a match-high 12 kills for West Valley. … Jordan Phelan had eight kills and Shalyn Stack added four blocks and five aces to lead the East Valley Knights to a 3-0 sweep over the visiting Cheney Blackhawks. Emily Fior totaled 24 assists for the victors.

Inland Empre League: Brittany Gay handed off 27 assists and Natalie Taylor led a balanced attack with seven kills as the Lake City Timberwolves rolled to a 3-0 victory over the host Post Falls Trojans.

Boys soccer

Inland Empre League: Pierre Schrambach scored four goals – all in the first half – and the Coeur d’Alene Vikings breezed to a 5-0 victory over the visiting Lewiston Bengals in IEL 5A play. Daniel Challinor added a goal and an assist for CdA.

Girls soccer

Inland Empre League: Deny Randall found the net in the 75th minute and the Lewiston Bengals rallied for a 2-1 win over the visiting Coeur d’Alene Vikings in IEL 5A action. Sydney Quimby scored in the 9th minute to stake CdA to a 1-0 lead, but Madison Taylor pulled Lewiston even with a penalty-kick goal in the 30th minute.

Great Northern League: Jenna Sullens netted two goals and added an assist to power the visiting West Valley Eagles to a 6-0 romp over the Pullman Greyhounds. … Micaela Verdal scored two goals – one in each half – and the East Valley Knights breezed to a 3-0 win over the visiting Cheney Blackhawks.

Intermountain League: Katie Baxter tallied two goals and assisted on a goal by Mary Nicklay to propel Coeur d’Alene Charter to a 4-0 victory over the visiting Timberlake Tigers.

Awards

Whitworth Pirates senior forward Micheal Ramos was named the Northwest Conference men’s soccer offensive player of the week

Ramos totaled four goals and four assists in wins over George Fox and Pacific last weekend.

• Idaho Vandals sophomore Kavita Battan was named the Big Sky Conference offensive co-player of the week in women’s soccer after she scored a pair of game-winning goals in victories over Northern Colorado and North Dakota.

Gymnastics

USA Gymnastics selected Spokane as the site of its 2015 Women’s Junior Olympic Level 9 Western Championships to be held May 8-10.
