Western district names attorney

SEATTLE – Annette Hayes has been named acting U.S. attorney for the Western District of Washington, following the resignation of Jenny Durkan.

Durkan’s last day in office was Tuesday, and on Wednesday the Executive Office of U.S. Attorneys picked Hayes – her second-in-command – to fill in pending the confirmation of a presidentially appointed replacement.

The 52-year-old Hayes has been at the U.S. attorney’s office in Seattle since 1997, and during that time she has prosecuted drug trafficking, cyber hacking and intellectual property crimes.

She also helped train new attorneys on how to handle various cases.

Hayes was named Durkan’s first assistant U.S. attorney in 2010.

She is a graduate of Cornell Law School and Williams College.

The U.S. attorney’s office said that before becoming a prosecutor, she spent six years as a civil litigator at firms in Seattle and Washington, D.C.

Durkan said she hasn’t decided what she’ll do next.
