Cougars without a pair of starting receivers

STANFORD, Calif. – The Cougars were down a pair of starting receivers during Friday night’s game. Kristoff Williams practiced some last week but did not take the field and didn’t appear to be on the WSU sideline. He’s still listed as the starting Z-receiver but has not played since the Cougars’ second game, against Nevada.

He also began the season as WSU’s primary kickoff returner.

Starting H-receiver Rickey Galvin almost did not play at Stanford, a missed opportunity for the Bay Area native to play near his childhood home. Galvin was limited in practice during the week leading up to the game. The inside receiver also missed the Nevada game, leading to freshman Calvin Green’s first start of the season.

Green also started at Stanford and finished with one catch for zero yards.

Backup Y-receiver Robert Lewis also saw time at H-receiver in Galvin’s place.

Galvin came to WSU as a running back but was moved by Mike Leach’s staff following the 2012 coaching change.

He broke his right arm during the first game of his freshman season in a game against Oklahoma State, causing him to redshirt and miss the rest of the season.

Dom Williams was suited up after being limited somewhat in practice but played sparingly and did not record a catch.

Cougs’ White injured

Cornerback Charleston White broke up a third-down Stanford pass to Michael Rector in the third quarter, but landed awkwardly on his back and was unable to get to his feet.

White was down on the field surrounded by players for a few minutes until trainers asked them to give them room.

Eventually the cornerback walked off the field slowly with help from two trainers and was taken to the locker room.

He did not return to the sideline for the remainder of the game.

WSU bails on the run

With about 13:30 left in the second quarter, the Cougars called their first run play of the game. Jamal Morrow took the handoff and fought to get outside but was brought down for no gain.

WSU did not try deliberately run the ball again for the rest of the half.

The Cougars did turn to the run late in the game, however. In the fourth quarter Jamal Morrow converted a key third-down play with a 5-yard run after already extending the same WSU drive with a 12-yard rush.
