In brief: Roger Federer beats Novak Djokovic in Shanghai semis

Tennis: Roger Federer avenged a tough loss to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final by beating the top-ranked Serb 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters on Saturday.

The Swiss star relentlessly charged the net and volleyed with precision, winning 20 of his 35 forays. He also served strongly, firing four aces in a row to win one game in the first set.

Federer will face Frenchman Gilles Simon today.

• Stosur, Diyas advance: Top-seeded Sam Stosur reached the final of the Japan Women’s Open in Osaka with a 7-6 (6), 6-2 victory against Elina Svitolina of Ukraine. Stosur will play Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan, who beat Luksika Kumkhum of Thailand 6-2, 7-5.

• Pliskova, Giorgi to meet: Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic rallied to defeat Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and set up a final against Camila Giorgi of Italy at the Generali Ladies in Linz, Austria.

Deadline approaches for suit

NFL: Tuesday remains the deadline to opt out of the NFL’s class-action settlement of concussion claims after a judge denied requests by former players for an extension.

Lawyers for the family of the late Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson and others had asked for a delay until after objections are weighed at a Nov. 19 fairness hearing.

The lead lawyers who negotiated the minimum $765 million deal oppose the delay. They argue that many of the nearly 20,000 former players need the money quickly.

• Titans’ Roos to IR: Tennessee signed tight end Brett Brackett to their active roster and placed offensive tackle Michael Roos on injured reserve. Roos, a 10-year veteran from Eastern Washington, has an injured right knee.

Bae leads at Frys.com Open

Golf: Bae Sang-moon took the lead early and expanded it late in the Frys.com Open, closing with three big putts for a 7-under 65 and a four-shot lead going into the final round in Napa, California.

• Phatlum on top: Thailand’s Pornanong Phatlum birdied seven of the first 10 holes and finished with a 6-under 65 to take a three-stroke lead in the LPGA Malaysia at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.

• Triplett snatches lead: Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett holed out from 143 yards for eagle on the par-4 18th hole to take a two-stroke lead in the Champions Tour’s SAS Championship in Cary, North Carolina.

• Levy holds edge: France’s Alexander Levy had a three-stroke lead in the Portugal Masters in Vilamoura after the completion of the second round in the event cut to 54 holes because of rain.

Coyotes sink defending champs

NHL: Oliver Ekman-Larrson beat Jonathan Quick with a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net on a power play with 14 seconds left in overtime, giving Arizona a 3-2 victory over Los Angeles in Glendale, Arizona.

• Crosby carries Pens: Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists, all on the power play, for his second straight three-point game and Pittsburgh beat host Toronto 5-2.

Canucks top Oilers in SO: Chris Higgins scored the only goal of the shootout to give the Vancouver Canucks a 5-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

Dempsey among new U.S. callups

Miscellany: Six Major League Soccer players were added to the U.S. roster for Tuesday’s exhibition game against Honduras.

The additions were: Seattle forward Clint Dempsey, Toronto midfielder Michael Bradley, Kansas City defender Matt Besler and midfielder Graham Zusi, New England midfielder Jermaine Jones and Chicago goalkeeper Sean Johnson.

They replaced Galaxy forward Landon Donovan and defender Omar Gonzalez, Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan, Salt Lake midfielder Luis Gil, Hertha Berlin defender John Brooks and Borussia Dortmund forward Joe Gyau.

• Biles denied third gold: Hong Un Jong of North Korea won the vault event, denying Simone Biles of the United States a third gold medal at the gymnastics world championships in Nanning, China.

Russian Dennis Abliazin won the men’s floor exercise, while Hungary’s Krisztian Berki took the pommel horse. China’s Yao Jinnan was victorious in the uneven bars.

• U.S. makes final: The United States shut out top-ranked Brazil 3-0 and will face China in the final of the women’s volleyball world championship today in Milan.

The Americans rallied from behind in the second set for a 25-18, 29-27, 25-20 win.

China beat host Italy 25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 30-28.

• Kienle takes Ironman: Germany’s Sebastian Kienle won the Ironman World Championship for the first time, beating American Ben Hoffman by more than five minutes in Kailua-Kona, Hawai.
