Spokane police surround house after stabbing

Spokane police late Saturday were surrounding a home in southwest Spokane where they believed a man who stabbed another was hiding.

Police were called to the 2000 block of West Seventh Avenue about 7 p.m. where the victim was stabbed in his car, Spokane police Lt. Alan Arnzen said.

Witnesses said the victim was arguing with a woman in his car when two men approached and argued with the driver, Arnzen said. One of the men reached into the car and stabbed the driver.

The driver, in an attempt to flee, drove into an adjacent field and his car struck the companion of the stabber, Arnzen said.

“The guy who did the stabbing took off,” Arnzen said. “He left his buddy on the ground.”

The stabbing victim suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Arnzen said. The man struck by the car suffered minor injuries. A woman in the car was uninjured.

Police have identified the person they believe did the stabbing but did not release his name. Arnzen said officers tracked him to a small home in the 600 block of South Cannon Street.

“Somebody answered the door. He said, ‘Who is it?’ We said ‘Spokane police,’ and that was the end of it,” Arnzen said.

Arnzen said the suspect does not have a lengthy criminal record. Police were not planning to bring the department’s Emergency Response Unit – the group formerly known as SWAT – to the scene.

“We don’t know who’s in there,” he said.
