Prep roundup: Bonners Ferry boys earn state soccer berth

The Bonners Ferry boys soccer team secured a spot in the state tournament after knocking off Timberlake in a shootout in the 3A District I-II title match Thursday at Community Methodist Church in Coeur d’Alene.

Timberlake has one more chance to punch its ticket to state. The Tigers have a play-in match Saturday in Lewiston.

Timberlake’s Thomas Hauck opened the scoring in the 44th minute, but Bonners Ferry (10-7) tied it up in the 55th minute. Neither team scored the rest of the second half or either of the two overtime periods. The Badgers won the shootout 4-2.

Bonners Ferry outshot Timberlake 12-6. Caleb Blackmore had five saves for the Badgers and Matt Suhr had 11 for Timberlake.

The 3A state tournament will be held Oct. 23-25 at Sunway Soccer Complex in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Girls soccer

Ashley Busch scored in the 76th minute and Sandpoint clipped Moscow 1-0 in a 4A Region I title match in Moscow, Idaho.

The win gave the Bulldogs a berth to the state tournament. Moscow was eliminated.

• Timberlake beat Coeur d’Alene Charter 1-0 in the 3A District I-II title match in Coeur d’Alene.

The win gave the Tigers a berth to the 3A state tournament. Coeur d’Alene Charter will play Fruitland in a state play-in match on Saturday in Lewiston.

• Abby Swanson scored two goals and Morgan Williams added a goal and an assist as West Valley (10-2, 8-1) blanked Pullman (0-12, 0-9) 3-0 in a Great Northern League game at West Valley.

Swanson opened the scoring in the 19th minute and Williams made it 2-0 with her 34th-minute goal. The only goal in the second half belonged to Swanson, who scored in the 74th minute.

• Kendyl Cone’s unassisted goal in the 59th minute was the difference in Cheney’s 1-0 Great Northern League win over visiting East Valley (7-3, 6-3).

The Knights held a 9-4 advantage in shots, but couldn’t get any past Blackhawks’ (3-10, 3-6) keeper Paige Lewis, who made nine saves.

Volleyball

Natalie Taylor racked up 13 kills and 10 digs and Lake City (2-3) made quick work of Post Falls (0-6), beating the Trojans 25-8, 25-23, 27-25 in an Inland Empire League 5A match in Coeur d’Alene.

Clarissa Smith chipped in 12 kills for the Timberwolves.

• Jordan Phelan had 28 kills, Emily Sior dished out 56 assists and Brooklyn Juris added 28 digs as East Valley (9-0) held off Cheney’s comeback attempt in a five-set Great Northern League win in Cheney. Scores were 25-17, 25-13, 23-25, 23-25 and 15-8.

Kimber Case had 17 digs for Cheney (4-6).

• Pullman (6-3) recovered after dropping the opening set and beat West Valley (1-8) in a Great Northern League match at West Valley. Scores were 17-25, 25-17, 26-24 and 25-19.

Erin Higbie had 14 kills for the Eagles.

• Jasmine Hill had 11 kills and Malorie Stippich added 18 digs as Bonners Ferry (6-0) beat Kellogg (2-2) 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18 in an Intermountain League match in Kellogg.
