Cougar collects Pac-12 soccer honor

Mariah Powers, a Washington State junior, was named the Pac-12 women’s soccer Defensive Player of the Week after scoring the game’s lone goal in the 107th minute in a vicory over Oregon in Pullman on Sunday and helping hold the Ducks to just two shots on goal.

Men’s tennis

Gonzaga’s Alvaro Nazl saw his run in the ITA Northwest Regionals come to an end Monday in Palo Alto, California, with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Ashot Khacharyan of Santa Clara in the semifinals.

Nazl played eight matches in four days, three of them going three sets. He had a 5-1 record in singles and reached the Round of 32 in doubles, posting a 1-1 record.

Football

Zach Johnson, an Eastern Washington senior who blocked a punt that led to a touchdown in Saturday’s 26-18 victory over Northern Colorado, was named the Big Sky Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.

• EWU remained second in The Sports Network FCS Top 25 poll for the eighth straight week.

Prep softball

North Central and Shadle Park went on the road and pulled off first-round victories in the GSL slowpitch playoffs.

NC, which got four hits and four RBIs from Alycia Patterson, overcame Mead 9-7 to earn a semifinal shot at Central Valley today.

Jaya Allen had a two-run home run in an 11-run fourth inning as Shadle defeated Lewis and Clark 14-12 to send the Highlanders to University today.

The season ended for Mead and LC.

Patterson had a two-run double and solo home run for NC. Maddie Icard added three hits with two RBIs in Shadle’s win.
