Madeleine’s closing to prepare new space

No more napoleons, pains au chocolat or croque monsieurs – at least, not until next year. Madeleine’s Cafe and Patisserie in downtown Spokane is closing Monday.

The cafe, which has anchored the corner of Main Avenue and Wall Street for more than seven years, had planned to reopen a couple of blocks away by Oct. 1. But construction delays have pushed the relocation back until early 2015.

Now, the plan is to move into its newly renovated space at 415 W. Main Ave. sometime “in early January,” according to the cafe’s Facebook page.

Named for Place de la Madeleine in Paris as well as the shell-shaped teacakes, the cafe will close at 5 p.m. Monday. Its lease is expiring before the renovation of the new cafe has been completed.

“We’re so excited for the opportunity to rebuild Madeleine’s, and can’t wait to show off our new location and the changes we’re making,” the cafe’s Facebook page said.
