EWU women’s soccer team qualifies for conference tournament

Kiana Hafferty scored in the 21st minute to give Eastern Washington a 1-0 soccer victory over host North Dakota on Sunday in Grand Forks and qualify for the Big Sky tournament.

The Eagles (8-7-0, 5-4) reached the tournament for the first time since 2009. The tournament will be held at the University of Montana over four days beginning Nov. 6. EWU’s seed is yet to be determined.

Nathalie Schwery made three saves in the win over UND (1-14-1, 0-9).

• Idaho (13-2, 4-3-2 Big Sky) dropped its final conference game, 3-1, to host Portland (8-5-4, 5-2-2). Olivia Baggerly had Idaho’s goal.

• Kaitlyn Johnson, Kourtney Guetlein, Chelsea Harkins and Jocelyn Jeffers scored in the first half for 24th-ranked WSU (10-2-3, 5-2-1 Pac-12) in a 4-2 victory over Utah (8-5-4, 1-5-2) at Salt Lake City.

• No. 18 Washington (12-4-1, 5-2-1 Pac-12) and host Colorado (10-6-1, 3-4-1) finished in a scoreless draw at Boulder.

• Whitworth (5-11-1, 4-9-0 Northwest) lost 1-0 to visiting Linfield (12-3-0, 9-3-0).

Men’s soccer

Host Whitworth (13-1-2, 8-1-2 Northwest) took its second golden-goal win in two days with a 2-1 victory over George Fox (2-13-1, 0-11-0) after Samual Jarrett scored less than a minute into overtime. Whitworth’s Robby Ubben tied the match in the 88th minute.

• Cristian Roldan scored in the 85th minute to lift fourth-ranked Washington (11-3-1, 4-2-1 Pac-12) to a 1-0 win over San Diego State (7-9-0, 1-6-0) in Seattle.

Volleyball

Washington State (10-12, 1-9) picked up its first Pac-12 victory with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-16 victory over Utah (12-9, 2-8) at Pullman. Kyra Holt had 12 kills and Chelsey Bettinson 11, the latter hitting .471.

• Third-ranked Washington (21-0, 10-0) saved five set points over the first two sets in sweeping Colorado (13-9, 5-5) at Seattle. The Huskies won 28-26, 31-29, 25-14.

Golf

Whitworth won the Northwest Conference Fall Men’s Classic at Chehalem Glenn GC in Newberg, Oregon, by eight strokes at 34 over. Oliver Rudnicki was the top Pirates golfer, tying for fourth with a two-round total of 6-over 150, three shots back of the medalist.

The Pirates were third in the women’s tournament at 105 over, 47 strokes back of champion George Fox. Nicole Lomax was Whitworth’s leader at 22-over 166 for seventh place, 12 back of the medalist.

• Idaho’s men placed 12th in the 14-team Price’s Give Em Five Invite at Butterfield Trail GC in El Paso, Texas. The Vandals finished three rounds at 5 under, 41 strokes back of champion New Mexico State. The top UI golfer was Aaron Cockerill, who tied for 21st at 6-under 210, 12 strokes back of two co-medalists.

Hockey

Taylor Everhart’s third-period goal proved to be the difference in the Spokane Braves’ 3-2 KIJHL victory over the host Revelstoke (British Columbia) Grizzlies (6-8-2-1, 15). Kyle Davis and Dillon Bogart scored in the first period for the Braves (8-6-0-3, 19).
