Streb takes 3-way playoff

Robert Streb made the last of his 10 birdies on the second extra hole, winning a three-way playoff in the McGladrey Classic on Sunday at St. Simons Island, Georgia, for his first PGA Tour victory.

Streb rallied from a five-shot deficit in the final round with a 7-under 63. He waited 90 minutes to see if anyone could catch him, and then outlasted Will MacKenzie and Brendon de Jonge in the playoff at Sea Island.

The victory sends Streb to the Masters in April. The 27-year-old from Oklahoma has never played in a major.

Streb never felt more pressure than over his final two putts. On the first playoff hole at No. 18, Streb ran his 35-foot birdie putt about 4 feet by the hole and had to make that one to stay alive. MacKenzie was eliminated with a bogey from the bunker.

De Jonge hit safely on the green at the par-3 17th, and Streb followed with an 8-iron that covered the flag and plopped down about 4 feet behind the cup.

Streb was the first to finish at 14-under 266, and it held up for the second playoff in the McGladrey Classic. De Jonge closed with a 65, and MacKenzie had a 68.

Champions Tour

Michael Allen shot a 6-under 66 for a two-stroke victory in the Champions Tour’s AT&T Championship in San Antonio, and Bernhard Langer wrapped up the Charles Schwab Cup title.

Allen birdied three of the final four holes on TPC San Antonio’s AT&T Canyons Course.

He finished at 15-under 201 for his second victory of the season and seventh overall on the 50-and-over tour. He won the Allianz Championship in Boca Raton, Florida, in February.

Marco Dawson was second after a 71. He bogeyed Nos. 16 and 18.

Langer closed with a 69 to tie for sixth at 10 under. He has a tour-high five victories – two of them majors – and leads the money list.

The top 30 on the money list qualified for the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship next week in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Esteban Toledo, 31st on the money list entering the week, birdied the final three holes for a 68 to tie for 12th at 8 under and move to 27th. He bumped Mark Calcavecchia, 30th entering the week, from the Schwab field. Calcavecchia tied for 72nd in the 81-player field at 4 over.

Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett finished at 9-under 207.

LPGA

South Africa’s Lee-Anne Pace won the rain-shortened Blue Bay LPGA in Hainan Island, China, for her first LPGA Tour title.

Four strokes ahead with five holes left when play was suspended Sunday because of darkness, Pace finished off a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke victory over Germany’s Caroline Masson.

Pace finished at 16-under 200 at Jian Lake Blue Bay.
