Chiefs blank Seattle

Adam Helewka’s first-period goal was the only score of the game in the Spokane Chiefs’ 1-0 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds in a Western Hockey League preseason matchup on Sunday in Everett.

Goaltenders Tyson Verhelst and Garret Hughson teamed up for a 19-save shutout.

Helewka scored on a power play at 10:24 of the opening period, assisted by Liam Stewart and Tyson Helgesen.

The power play was one of 10 for Spokane, though they could only capitalize for the one goal.

The Chiefs outshot the Thunderbirds 53-19, including 22-3 in the third period.

Women’s soccer

Washington State posted its sixth consecutive shutout over two seasons with a 2-0 victory over Montana in Pullman.

The Cougars, who held Montana to seven shots, extended their nation’s best active streak of shutout minutes to 652.

WSU (2-0-1) scored in the 16th minute against the Grizzlies (2-2-0) off a corner kick by Cara Wegner that was headed inside the near post by Kailiana Johnson. The Cougars added their second goal after Johnson’s free kick was blocked and Jordan Branch put in the rebound from 25 yards out for the freshman’s first goal.

• Karley Baggerly scored twice and Cassie Geerdts had a goal and two assists to lead Gonzaga to a 5-0 victory over Idaho (0-4-0) in Spokane. Brittany Doan and Savanah Van Citters also scored for the Bulldogs (3-1-0), who had a 26-2 edge in shots.

Volleyball

All-tournament selection Allie Schumacher had her second straight double-double but Eastern Washington lost its finale to UNC Wilmington 25-22, 25-17, 25-18 at the Hilton Garden Inn Wilmington Mayfaire Classic in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Schmacher had 11 kills and 10 digs, but EWU (2-2) had its lowest hitting percentage of the season at .094 while the Seahawks (3-1) blocked 13 shots.
