Hired Clemson assistant Earl Grant has been named the College of Charleston new men’s basketball coach, ending a nearly month-long search since the firing of Doug Wojcik. Wojcik was fired after his second year with the Cougars following an investigation into allegations that he verbally abused players, assistant coaches and staff in the athletic department.

Died San Diego sports all-star Charlie Powell, who was one of the first black NFL players and who later became a boxer and fought Cassius Clay, has died. He was 82. After graduating San Diego High in 1952 with 12 varsity letters, Powell turned down an offer to play for the Harlem Globetrotters. He briefly played pro baseball before joining the NFL when he was just 19 years old. He played for the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders. After retiring he turned to boxing, climbing to fourth in the world with bouts against Clay and Floyd Patterson.

Arrested Authorities say former NFL quarterback Max Hall has been accused of shoplifting and narcotics possession in Gilbert, Arizona. Hall, 28, played college football at Arizona State and BYU before being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Arizona Cardinals. He played in six games for the Cardinals in 2010 and was with the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2013.

Staying Oklahoma City basketball star Kevin Durant is staying with Nike. A Nike spokesman confirmed that Durant will remain with the shoe giant. Under Armour had reportedly offered the NBA star a major deal. Nike did not release terms of the deal. Durant signed with Nike in 2007, right about the time he was drafted in the first round by the Seattle SuperSonics. His KD shoes have been popular since the first was released in 2009.
