Area roundup: Rylan Berriman, Pirates clip Warriors

Rylan Berriman’s goal in the 97th minute gave the Whitworth men’s soccer team a 2-1 come-from-behind nonconference victory over Corban in the Pirates’ home opener Saturday afternoon in Spokane.

The goal came with the Warriors (2-2) playing down a man following a red-card ejection late in the second half.

The win kept Whitworth perfect on the season at 4-0. It was also the third time in those four matches that the Pirates had to rally from behind.

Corban’s Josh Noonkester opened the scoring in the 12th minute, but Whitworth’s Samuel Jarrett tied it at 1 in the 64th minute before Berriman’s eventual match-winner.

• East Valley graduate Adam Talley scored twice – his sixth and seventh goals of the young season – and North Idaho (3-0, 2-0) blanked Pierce (0-4-1, 0-2-1) 4-0 in a Northwest Athletic Conference match in Puyallup, Washington.

Alec Johnson (Lake City High School) and Matt Howard (Post Falls High School) also scored for the Cardinals, who had a 19-9 advantage in shots.

NIC keeper Mitch Markovetz made six saves to preserve his second shutout of the season.

Volleyball

Kyra Holt had 18 kills and 14 digs and Washington State (5-1) recovered after dropping the first set and beat Western Michigan (3-2) to win the Golden Dome Invitational in Notre Dame, Indiana. Scores were 18-25, 26-24, 25-19 and 25-23.

Chelsey Bettinson, who was named tournament MVP, added 15 kills. Jaicee Harris and Kate Sommer joined Bettinson on the all-tournament team.

WSU will play next weekend at the Blue Raiders Bash in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

• Gonzaga (5-1) earned straight-set wins over Canisius (0-6) and Montana State (2-4) at the Gonzaga Invitational in Spokane.

The Bulldogs opened with a 25-22, 25-18, 25-13 win over Canisius. Jordan Gasser and Savannah Blinn combined for 28 kills.

Gonzaga then beat the Bobcats 25-12, 25-20, 25-17. GU’s McKayla Ferris led all players with 14 kills.

• Whitworth (7-2) swept Whitman (3-2) and Mills (0-4) and claimed the Whit Classic title in Walla Walla.

The Pirates opened play Saturday with a 25-13, 29-27, 25-15 win over Whitman. They then made quick work of Mills, winning 25-7, 25-15 and 25-15.

Whitworth’s Maddye Dinsmore was named tournament MVP after finishing with 131 assists, 36 digs, 15 kills and seven aces in four tournament matches.

• Stephanie Hagins led three players with double-digit kills with 15 and Idaho (2-5) beat Pepperdine (3-3) 3-1 at the UC Irvine Tournament in Irvine, California. Scores were 25-23, 25-12, 21-25 and 25-17.

Ali Forde added 13 kills and 12 digs and Meredith Coba dished out 48 assists.

• North Idaho (4-7) beat Central Arizona and Hutchinson at the Southern Idaho Tournament in Twin Falls, Idaho.

The Cardinals beat Central Arizona 25-23, 26-24 and 25-12. NIC’s Dzeni Hadzisehovic had 11 kills.

Brittany Aldridge had 19 kills and Brenna Meehan added 21 digs in the Cardinals’ next match, a 25-15, 25-21, 16-25, 25-15 win over Hutchinson.

• Community Colleges of Spokane (6-5) fell to Olympic (8-2) and Blue Mountain (9-1) on the final day of the Spokane Invitational at Spokane Falls Community College.

CCS’ Maddie Zinsli and Korrie Stephenson were named to the all-tournament team.

Women’s soccer

Cameron Shivers scored in the 95th minute and Mary Hardin-Baylor (3-1) rallied late to beat Whitworth (1-3-1) 2-1 in a nonconference match in Georgetown, Texas.

Shivers’ goal was the first shot for either team during extra time. Kathryn Parker assisted on the goal.

Whitworth’s Tiara Pajimola opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 49th minute, but Parker knotted the contest at 1 in the 75th minute before Chivers’ match-winner.

• Rebeckah Julian’s 90th-minute goal helped Pierce (2-1-2, 2-0-1) preserve a 2-all draw with North Idaho (2-0-2, 1-0-2) in a Northwest Athletic Conference match in Lakewood, Washington.

Katelyn Sly and Meghan Pagano scored for the Cardinals. Haley White assisted on both goals.

NIC hosts Walla Walla on Tuesday.
