Agreed New Mexico men’s basketball coach Craig Neal has agreed to a new six-year, $5.7 million contract after leading the Lobos to the NCAA tournament in his first season at the helm, the school announced Monday. Neal led New Mexico to a 27-7 record last year and is the first coach to lead the Lobos to the NCAA tournament in his first season. Neal was already under contract through 2020, so the deal doesn’t extend the length but is “essentially” a pay increase, New Mexico athletics spokesman Matt Ensor said.

Stepping down University of Miami president Donna Shalala plans to step down in 2015, ending a tenure in which she raised the school’s profile while guiding the athletic department through a controversial move to the Atlantic Coast Conference and a scandal involving a rogue former booster. Shalala, 73, took over at Miami in 2001 after serving eight years as Health and Human Services Secretary under President Bill Clinton, with whom she remains close. A new president could be in place by the school’s next fiscal year, beginning June 1.

Hired Boise State senior associate athletic director Curt Apsey has been named the athletic director at Carroll College in Helena and will start on Oct. 6. Apsey has been at Boise State the past 16 years and has served as senior associate athletic director for nine years. At Boise State, Apsey led campaigns that raised $72 million over seven years for improvements to athletic facilities, cultivated $11 million in corporate sponsorships that allowed for the installation of new scoreboards and instant replay video boards at the football and basketball facilities.

Dead Former player and coach Marvin Barnes, who led Providence College to the Final Four in 1973 and starred in the old American Basketball Association, has died. He was 62. Kevin Stacom, a college teammate and one of Barnes’ closest friends, told the Providence Journal on Monday that Barnes died at a home in Providence. The cause of death was not known, but Barnes had battled drug addiction for years.
