In Brief: Dahmen Barn hosting apple pie baking contest

From Staff Reports

Bring your best apple pie to the Artisans at the Dahmen Barn on Sunday for the annual pie baking contest.

Entries can be apple or an apple combination, but no cream or custard pies are allowed. Bakers may enter a pie in each category.

Pies should be delivered to the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown before 6 p.m. on Saturday or between 8 and 10 a.m. on Sunday. Judging will begin at 10:30 a.m. There will be prizes for first and second place. Following judging, slices of pie à la mode will be sold as a fundraiser for the Dahmen Barn.

Register for the contest by emailing shopatthebarn@lewiston.com or by calling (509) 229-3414.

The contest is part of the eighth annual Fall Festival, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The event is free and open to the public. It features antique farm equipment in action, crafts, country antiques, an old car show and swap meet of parts, live music, children’s activities, pizza and a beer garden.

Artisans at the Dahmen Barn is a nonprofit creativity center off Highway 195 at 419 N. Park Way in Uniontown. On the Web: www.artisanbarn.org.

Anniversary events include cooking demos

The Kitchen Engine celebrates its eighth anniversary today through Friday with door prizes, deals and cooking demonstrations.

The event also features 15 to 70 percent off sale items as well as food samples from local chefs and culinary enthusiasts – like me.

I plan to be there from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday with samples of homemade marshmallows (as seen in the Sept. 3 Food section).

The store is at 621 W. Mallon Ave., Suite 416. For more information, visit www.thekitchenengine.com/ joom/ or call (509) 328-3335.
