Obituary: Cabbage, Mary Evelyn (Sexsmith)

Age 83

CABBAGE, Mary Evelyn (Sexsmith) February 16, 1931- September 5, 2014 Mary was born February 16, 1931 to Harvey F. and Bertha I. Sexsmith in Spirit Lake, Idaho.

She passed away peacefully at home on September 5, 2014 after a brief illness.

In 1947 she married Alexander Travis Phillips.

Four children, Charline, Travis, Linda, and Joseph, were born during their marriage.

They later divorced.

In 1955 Mary married William B. Cabbage, who brought a son, Patrick, into the marriage.

Bill and Mary moved to Columbia Falls, Montana where two more children, Julie and Bill were born.

In 1962 they returned to Spokane to be closer to family.

Mary loved babies, gardening, flowers, cooking, and made some of the best home-baked bread and pies ever tasted.

In 1978 Mary and Bill purchased acreage on 32nd Avenue across the road from the Saltese Cemetery.

Mary served for many years as the sexton of the Cemetery as well as serving on the Cemetery Board as secretary.

She was instrumental in helping to make several improvements to the Cemetery and developing many enduring friendships with the pioneer families of the Spokane Valley.

Mary was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, William B. Cabbage, who passed away August 14, 2014; her parents, Harvey Sexsmith and Bertha Rose; her children, Charline and Travis; and her siblings, Alvin, James, Robert, Bette, and Henry.

She is survived by daughters, Linda Hannigan and Julie Chadwell; and sons, Patrick (Beverly) Cabbage, Joseph Cabbage, and William C. (Terri) Cabbage, all of Spokane.

Also surviving are 16 grandchildren; 16 great- grandchildren; sister, Patricia (Dale) Roberts, of Spokane; and numerous nieces and nephews.

At Mary’s request, no public funeral service will be held.

A private family graveside service will be held at the Saltese Cemetery, which she loved so much.
