Judge denies Kevin Coe’s request for release

A federal judge in Tacoma rejected a request from convicted rapist Kevin Coe to be released from McNeil Island, where he is incarcerated under the state’s Sexually Violent Predator program. U.S. District Judge J. Richard Creatura rejected Coe’s argument that he had ineffective lawyers when fighting the civil commitment proceeding that could keep him behind bars for life. Coe was civilly committed after he served his sentence for a sexual assault that was part of the string of South Hill rapes in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was convicted of rape in 1985 and was due to be released from prison in 2006 when the state obtained a jury verdict labeling him as a sexually violent predator.
