In brief: Jerome Boateng lifts Bayern over Manchester City

SOCCER: Jerome Boateng scored in the 90th minute to give Bayern Munich a 1-0 victory over visiting Manchester City on Wednesday in the Champions League on Wednesday in Geneva.

Boateng’s powerful shot appeared to deflect off teammate Mario Goetze.

Also, Gerard Pique scored in Barcelona’s 1-0 victory over APOEL, heading in Lionel Messi’s free kick in the 28th minute.

Chelsea was held to a 1-1 home tie against Schalke.

On a bad night for eastern European champions, Roma routed CSKA Moscow 5-1, and Porto beat BATE Borisov 6-0. Elsewhere, it was: Ajax 1, Paris Saint-Germain 1; Maribor 1, Sporting Lisbon 1; and Athletic Bilbao 0, Shakhtar Donetsk 0.

CSKA faces further sanctions from UEFA after its fans threw flares, holding up play for 2 minutes in the second half at the Olympic Stadium. It must already host Bayern next in an empty stadium because of fans’ racist behavior last season.

Sharks sign Braun to five-year extension

NHL: The San Jose Sharks signed defenseman Justin Braun to a $19 million, five-year extension.

Braun emerged as one of San Jose’s top defensemen last season, often drawing the most difficult matchups. He was second on the team in average time on ice per game (20:59), tied for first in short-handed ice time per game (2:11) and set career highs for points (17), goals (four) and assists (13).

• Oilers get new skating coach: The Edmonton Oilers hired Olympic figure skating champion David Pelletier as a skating coach.

Pelletier won a gold medal in pairs with partner Jamie Sale at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. The Canadians were awarded gold along with a Russian pair after a judging scandal.

Rockets deal Gee, receive guard Terry

NBA: The Houston Rockets acquired guard Jason Terry from the Sacramento Kings for two second-round draft picks and guard/forward Alonzo Gee.

The Kings also received guard Scotty Hopson and a trade exception from Houston in the deal.

The 37-year-old Terry started last season with Brooklyn and averaged only 4.5 points in 35 games. He was moved to Sacramento at the trade deadline and didn’t play the rest of the season as he recovered from a left knee injury.

• Hickson suspended: Denver Nuggets center/forward J.J. Hickson was suspended for five games without pay by the NBA for violating the terms of the anti-drug program.

Hickson averaged 11.8 rebounds and 9.2 rebounds in 69 games last season.

Marlins slugger ruled out for the season

MLB: Injured Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton is finished for the season because of last week’s beaning.

Stanton was hit in the face by a fastball from Milwaukee’s Mike Fiers last Thursday. Stanton sustained facial fractures, dental damages, cuts that required stitches and two black eyes.

The 24-year-old Stanton is a top candidate for the N.L. MVP award. His 37 home runs still are the most in the N.L., and he was leading the majors with 105 RBIs when he was hurt.

Stroman to appeal: Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman is appealing his six-game suspension that the MLB imposed for throwing at the head of a Baltimore hitter.

On Monday night, Stroman threw a pitch that sailed past the head of Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph.

Stroman stayed in the game, struck out Joseph to end the inning and engaged the Baltimore dugout as he left the mound.

• Umpire suspended for contact: Umpire Joe West has been suspended for one game without pay for grabbing the jersey of Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon.

Papelbon was suspended seven games and fined Monday for making a lewd gesture and then bumping West.

Dodgers get new affiliate: The owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers reached an agreement to buy a stake in the Oklahoma City RedHawks, and the team will change its Triple-A affiliation to Oklahoma City next year.

The deal marks the end of the Dodgers’ minor league presence in Albuquerque after 44 years. The Dodgers will continue to play in the Pacific Coast League while moving to its American Northern Division and playing at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Scott parts ways with caddie Williams

GOLF: Adam Scott is looking for a caddie now that he and Steve Williams have decided to end their partnership.

Scott said in a statement that he and Williams are at different stages of their lives.

Williams has been on the bag for 14 majors – 13 with Tiger Woods. He began working with Scott in the summer of 2012. He helped read the putt on the 10th hole at Augusta National last year when Scott became the first Australian to win the Masters.
