In Brief: United Way seeks nominations for Spokane’s Philanthropy Awards

SPOKANE COUNTY – Spokane County United Way Emerging Leaders Society is seeking nominations for Spokane’s Philanthropy Awards.

The purpose of the awards is to recognize and celebrate acts of compassion and philanthropy in the community, according to a news release from the city.

The five categories for the awards are:

• Outstanding Philanthropists (individual, couple, or family)

• Philanthropic Small Business of the Year (50 employees or under)

• Philanthropic Corporation of the Year (51+ employees)

• Philanthropic Organization of the Year (grant-making entities, foundations, organizations that raise private funds and grant those out, as well as organizations serving the community)

• Young Philanthropist (up to age 21)

Nominations are due today. Find nomination forms online at www.spokanegives.org or www.unitedwayspokane.org.

Fill the Boot fundraiser begins

SPOKANE COUNTY – Firefighters will fight muscular dystrophy with the annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign Saturday.

Crews from Spokane Valley Fire Department and Spokane County Fire District 8 will be collecting money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at these locations:

• 57th Avenue and Regal Street, Spokane.

• North Liberty Lake Road and East Country Vista Drive, Liberty Lake.

• Rosauers, 10618 E. Sprague Ave., Spokane Valley.

• Lowe’s, 16205 E. Broadway Ave., Spokane Valley.

The money raised will be used for research, health care and patient support, including sending children to Camp Twinlow.

Locals take part in PARK(ing) event

DOWNTOWN – Local members of the American Society of Landscape Architects will take part in the worldwide PARK(ing) event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday by creating a pop-up park in a parking spot near Main Avenue and Post Street.

The event is meant to raise awareness about creating walkable, healthy cities.
