Anderson, Bulldogs rally to victory in women’s soccer

Mikayla Anderson’s goal in the 107th minute gave Gonzaga a 2-1 double-overtime victory over North Texas in a nonconference women’s soccer match Friday night in Denton, Texas.

Tori Lee assisted on Anderson’s game-winner.

The Bulldogs (5-4) fell behind 1-0 midway through the first half and struggled to create scoring chances throughout.

In the 90th minute, GU’s Brittany Doan scored to prolong the game.

The win was GU’s second in a row following a three-game skid.

The Bulldogs play Southern Methodist in Dallas on Sunday.

North Texas fell to 6-2.

• Storm Kenui’s 41st-minute goal proved to be the difference in Hawaii’s 3-1 nonconference win over Eastern Washington (2-3) in Missoula.

After EWU’s Chloe Williams scored in the 31st minute to knot the match at 1, Kenui and Hayden Gibson scored to put Hawaii (4-5) back on top for good.

• Maria Monterroso scored twice late in the second half and Grand Canyon (1-5-1) defeated Idaho 2-1 in a nonconference match in Phoenix.

Idaho (0-8) took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute thanks to an own goal.

• Jaimee Hulst’s hat trick lifted North Idaho past Southwestern Oregon 3-0 in a Northwest Athletic Conference match in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Hulst scored twice in the first half and capped the scoring in the 80th minute. Meghan Pagano assisted on the final two goals.

NIC improved to 2-0-4 and 1-0-4 in the NWAC. Southwestern Oregon fell to 1-6-1 and 0-4-1.

• Community Colleges of Spokane (9-2, 6-1) scored a goal in each half and beat Clark (2-4-2, 1-3-2) 2-1 in a NWAC match in Vancouver, Washington.

Men’s soccer

Adam Talley scored in the 40th minute to break a 1-all tie and North Idaho (7-0, 5-0) went on to beat Southwestern Oregon (3-6, 0-6) 2-1 in a Northwest Athletic Conference match in Coeur d’Alene.

Neither team scored in the second half. North Idaho’s Braden Ridgewell scored in the opening minute to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead, but Southwestern Oregon’s Isaias Sanchez tied it at 1 with a goal in the 37th minute.

• Clark (6-0-2, 3-0-2) scored a goal in each half and beat Community Colleges of Spokane (7-3, 5-1) 2-0 in an NWAC match in Vancouver, Washington.

Volleyball

Litara Keil had 15 kills and Sarah Sponcil added 14 kills and 10 digs as No. 23 Loyola Marymount (12-0) recovered after dropping the first set and beat Washington State (9-3) at the Cougar Challenge in Pullman. Scores were 21-25, 25-20, 28-26 and 25-21.

Jaicee Harris had 13 kills and six digs and Haley MacDonald dished out 46 assists for the Cougars.

WSU swept Portland State (2-10) earlier in the day.

Prior to its win over Washington State, Loyola Marymount beat Idaho (4-8) 25-19, 25-15, 25-14.

• Savannah Blinn had 16 kills and Lauren Joseph added 38 assists and eight digs as Gonzaga beat Seattle 25-12, 25-17, 27-25 in a nonconference game in Missoula.

The Bulldogs improved to 8-2, the program’s best start since 1990. The Redhawks fell to 3-8.

• Eastern Washington (4-9) fell in straight sets to San Diego and Stanford (9-0) at the University of San Diego Invitational.

The Eagles have lost seven straight matches.

The Eagles’ Kelsey Julian had 17 kills. EWU will look to snap its losing streak at North Dakota Thursday in its Big Sky Conference opener.

• Lucy Capron had 13 kills and 24 digs and No. 15 Pacific Lutheran (8-2, 1-0) spoiled Whitworth’s comeback bid in a five-set win in a Northwest Conference opener in Parkland, Washington.

Scores were 25-21, 25-16, 17-25, 22-25 and 15-12.

Nicole Leonard led four Pirates (7-3, 0-1) in double digits with 15 kills. She also had 26 digs.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Braves scored three first-period goals and held on to beat the Castlegar Rebels (1-3-0-0) 4-3 in a KIJHL game in Castlegar, British Colulmbia.

Jonny Marzec, Hayden Boring, Sean Collins and Tanner Stolz all scored goals for Spokane (2-1-0-0).
