Around the Remote: ‘Gotham’ debuts on Fox

Chuck Barney Mcclatchy-Tribune

Don’t miss

“Gotham”: The new TV season revs up in earnest this week and no freshman series arrives lathered in more hype than this fun, visually gorgeous Batman-origin story. It delivers viewers to a grimy, corrupt city where a rookie cop (Ben McKenzie) is taking the first steps toward becoming Commissioner Gordon, and an 11-year-old Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) is struggling to find his way in the world. Best of all, we see how a bunch of colorful villains – including the Penguin, Catwoman and the Riddler – got their start. We anticipate spending many a dark night with this show. 8 p.m. Monday, Fox.

Other bets

SUNDAY: “Madam Secretary” is a new high-stakes political drama starring Tea Leoni as a college professor who is suddenly tapped to be the nation’s secretary of state. Of course, diplomatic calamities quickly ensue. 8 p.m., CBS.

SUNDAY: “The Good Wife” launches its sixth season and we have questions: Will Alicia (Juliana Margulies) run for state attorney? Will Diane (Christine Baranski) actually jump ship? Will Emmy voters ever realize how good this show is? 9 p.m., CBS.

MONDAY: “The Voice” tries to continue hitting the high notes in Season 7 as two new coaches – Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams – take the hot seats. The Season 2 premiere of “The Blacklist” immediately follows. 8 p.m., NBC.

MONDAY: As Season 8 of “The Big Bang Theory” unfolds, our favorite gang of geeks will be trying to prove they’re worth those hefty pay raises. A second episode immediately follows the opener. 8 p.m., CBS.

MONDAY: Can “Sleepy Hollow” become even more kooky in its second season? We can always dream. 9 p.m., Fox.

TUESDAY: Break out the gumbo and po-boys. “NCIS: New Orleans” looks to extend the successful franchise with a spinoff set in the Big Easy, and a solid cast headed by Scott Bakula. 9 p.m., CBS.

WEDNESDAY: The buzzy new family sitcom, “Black-ish,” is pegged to a successful business man (Anthony Anderson) with a great wife (Tracee Ellis Ross) and adorable kids. But he worries that they’ve lost touch with their African-American heritage. 9:30 p.m., ABC.

THURSDAY: Viola Davis plays a charismatic attorney and law professor in the sexy, twisty new legal drama “How to Get Away With Murder.” The opener airs right after the Season 4 premiere of “Scandal.” 10 p.m., ABC.

THURSDAY: Why are we breaking out the Kleenex? The sixth and final season of “Parenthood” launches tonight and we have a feeling the Bravermans aren’t in for a perfectly happy ending. 10 p.m., NBC.

FRIDAY: As “The Amazing Race” launches its 25th season, we’re plagued by one burning question: Just how many frequent-flier miles does host Phil Keoghan have in his account? 8 p.m., CBS.

SATURDAY: Wow. “Saturday Night Live” turns 40 this season (Bring back Mr. Bill!). To kick things off, Chris Pratt is our host and Ariana Grande the musical guest. 11:30 p.m., NBC.
