A week after the Giants blew a fourth-quarter lead, they’re bringing in The Closer.

Mariano Rivera will be honored by the New York Giants at today’s game against the Texans as the recipient of the NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award. The awards recognize the contributions of Hispanic leaders in each NFL market. Each award recipient will select an organization of his or her choice that serves the local Hispanic community to receive a $2,000 donation.

The Giants’ donation will go to the Mariano Rivera Foundation. Rivera and his family will accept the award at halftime. He and his wife, Clara, founded their foundation in 1998.

Patterson released on bond ahead of trial

A man charged in the killing of the 2-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson in Sioux Falls, South Dakota last fall has been released on a $2 million bond.

Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead said a bond was posted for 28-year-old Joseph Patterson on Friday.

Patterson is scheduled for trial in October on charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter and aggravated assault in the October 2013 death of Tyrese Ruffin.

Patterson was released last year on those charges after his father posted a $750,000 bond. He was arrested again in June, and his bond was raised after prosecutors said he attacked the boy’s mother that month.

The Oakland Raiders listed backup quarterback Matt Schaub as out today at New England. The team issued a release Saturday saying Schaub won’t play but it’s not injury related. … Wide receiver Eric Decker is listed as questionable and cornerback Dee Milliner doubtful for the New York Jets’ game Monday night against the Chicago Bears. Decker, dealing with tightness in his right hamstring, was limited in practice Saturday after sitting out the previous three days. Milliner appears unlikely to play after sitting out a second straight day. He made his season debut last Sunday after suffering a high ankle sprain in training camp, but now also is being hobbled by tightness in his quadriceps. … The San Francisco 49ers have released quarterback Josh Johnson. Without Johnson, the 49ers are left with Blaine Gabbert to back up Colin Kaepernick.
