6-8 wing King commits to Cougars

Derrien King, a 6-foot-8 wing from Los Angeles, has given an oral commitment to basketball coach Ernie Kent to play at Washington State, according to multiple reports.

King is a freshman at Santa Monica (Junior) College.

Kent has now secured oral commitments from at least two recruits in the 2015 class: King and power forward Jeff Pollard from Utah. Kent has one more scholarship to offer in this class.

Women’s soccer

Savannah Hoekstra scored the match’s only goals in Eastern Washington’s 2-0 victory over Colorado State (2-6) at the Montana Invitational in Missoula.

Hoekstra scored at 5:19 and 16:44 to up her season total to four, best for the Eagles (3-3).

EWU’s Chloe Williams had an assist and Nathalie Schwery made six saves.

• Gonzaga fell to SMU 2-1 in a nonconference overtime match in Dallas. Lauren Guerra scored both goals for the Mustangs (4-5-0), including the winner at 6:05 into the first overtime.

Mikayla Anderson, off an assist from Katey Pennington, scored for the Bulldogs (5-5-0).

• Idaho (0-9) remained winless with a 3-0 nonconference loss to host Arizona (6-1-1) in Tucson.

• Host Whitworth (1-5-1, 0-3-0 Northwest Conference) lost 1-0 to Willamette (2-5-0, 1-2-0). Jill Phillips scored the goal in the 62nd minute.

Men’s soccer

Micheal Ramos’ goal in the first half sent Whitworth (6-0-1, 1-0-1 NWC) to a 1-0 win over Willamette (4-4-0, 1-1-0) in Spokane.

Golf

With four individuals among the top nine, the Whitworth men won their second consecutive tournament to start the season, taking the Pacific Fall Opener by eight strokes over Willamette at Quail Valley Golf Club in Banks, Oregon.

Whitworth’s Andrew Dodge and Oliver Rudnicki finished the two rounds tied for second place, eight strokes back of the medalist.

In the women’s competition, Chelsea Bayley finished fifth and teammate Michal Schuster sixth to lead Whitworth to third place, four strokes out of second and 30 behind winner Whitman.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Braves (3-1-0-1, 7 points) rallied from a two-goal deficit only to see Kamloops (3-2-0-0, 6) score 1:12 into overtime to win 4-3 in a KIJHL game at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Hayden Boring, Tyler Wilkerson and Lance Noomen scored for the Braves. Jonny Marzec had three assists for Spokane.
