Eliminated Braves cut ties with GM

MLB: The Atlanta Braves have fired general manager Frank Wren.

The move was announced Monday by team president John Schuerholz, one day after the team was eliminated from the N.L. playoff race.

Schuerholz has appointed former major league executive and MLB Network analyst John Hart as the team’s interim general manager.

The Braves have formed a three-person team to conduct the search for Wren’s replacement. It will include Schuerholz, Hart and former Braves manager Bobby Cox.

Wren was in his 15th season with the Braves and his seventh as the club’s general manager. He was named to the GM post after the 2007 season, when Schuerholz gave up his longtime job to become team president.

The North Carolina product averaged career-bests in shooting percentage (.437) and 3-point percentage (.424) for the Mavericks last year, appearing in the playoffs for the first time.

Los Angeles has 14 players under contract for training camp.

Injured Weidman will miss UFC 181

MISCELLANY: UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman has injured his right hand in training, forcing the postponement of his Dec. 6 title defense against Vitor Belfort.

The UFC 181 card will now be headlined by welterweight champion Johny Hendricks’ rematch with Robbie Lawler.

UFC 181 will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas where reigning lightweight champion Anthony Pettis defends his title against Gilbert Melendez on the same card.

Weidman has won two title defenses since taking the belt from Anderson Silva in July 2013.
