Soccer: American forward Jozy Altidore ended a 30-game club scoreless streak dating to Dec. 4, getting the game’s first goal Tuesday night for Sunderland in a 2-1 loss to Stoke in the third round of England’s League Cup.

Altidore’s goal in the 16th minute was his first for Sunderland since scoring against Chelsea in a Premier League match. His only goals since then in any game had been when he scored twice for the U.S. in a 2-1 exhibition win over Nigeria on June 7.

Liverpool beat Middlesbrough 14-13 on penalty kicks after a 2-2 tie, a 30-kick shootout that was the longest in the history of the competition, which began in 1960-61. The Reds won when Middlesbrough’s Albert Adomah sent his second kick wide.

In all-Premier League matchups, Arsenal surrendered a one-goal lead in a 2-1 loss to Southampton. Alexis Sanchez scored on a 14th-minute free kick for the Gunners, but Dusan Tadic’s 20th-minute penalty kick tied the score after Tomas Rosicky fouled Sadio Mane. Nathaniel Clyne got the go-ahead goal from long range in the 40th minute.

Goetze leads Bayern Munich: Mario Goetze scored two goals as Bayern Munich defeated Paderborn 4-0 and moved into the Bundesliga lead.

Ronaldo scores four: Cristiano Ronaldo scored four goals to increase his season total to 12 in all competitions, leading Real Madrid to a 5-1 rout of Elche in the Spanish league.

Baseball: The Baltimore Orioles say Chris Tillman will pitch their playoff opener next week.

Tillman, a former Mariner, is 13-5 with a 3.26 ERA. He has given up three runs or fewer in his last 20 starts.

The Orioles will open the best-of-five A.L. division series a week from Thursday at Camden Yards.

Alderson receives extension: General manager Sandy Alderson and the New York Mets have completed a contract extension that runs through 2017.

Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon says the team has exercised Alderson’s option for next season and added two years to his deal. Wilpon says ownership is pleased with the job Alderson has done over the past four years, and he will have payroll flexibility to continue to improve the club through free agency or trades.

Mavericks sign former Piston Villanueva

NBA: The Dallas Mavericks have signed free agent forward Charlie Villanueva, who spent the past five years with Detroit.

The signing gives the Mavericks 19 players on their roster with training camp opening next Tuesday. Villanueva had his best season in 2008-09, when he averaged 16.2 points and 6.7 rebounds in his final season with Milwaukee.

Hawks add to roster: The Atlanta Hawks have signed free-agent guard Kent Bazemore and re-signed forward-center Elton Brand.

The 6-foot-5 Bazemore played for Golden State and the Los Angeles Lakers last season. After he was acquired by the Lakers on Feb. 13, he averaged 13.1 points in 23 games, including 15 starts. Brand averaged 5.7 points last season.

NASCAR bans private testing for 2015

Motor sports: NASCAR will ban all private testing in 2015, including the annual Daytona 500 test, according to the rules package released to teams.

The only testing allowed next season will be sessions conducted by NASCAR or Goodyear. The penalty for teams caught testing on their own will be a P6 – the highest penalty on NASCAR’s new punishment scale, and that carries a loss of 150 points, a minimum $150,000 fine and a six-week suspension for the crew chief and other crew members.

The qualifying formats will be tweaked everywhere, including the season-opening Daytona 500. The front row will now be set through group qualifying instead of single-car runs.

NASCAR is also reducing engine horsepower from 850 to 725, and cutting the rear spoiler to 6-inches.

Serena Williams exits China event

Tennis: Top-ranked Serena Williams is out in the second round of the new WTA event at Wuhan, China, retiring after 11 games and dropping a third match to Alize Cornet this year.

Williams, who won the U.S. Open just over two weeks ago, was leading 6-5 when she was treated beside the court. The reason for the retirement was not immediately clear.

Cornet beat Williams at Dubai in February and had a shocking third-round win at Wimbledon.
