Fourth-ranked Huskies sweep WSU in volleyball

Fourth-ranked Washington (12-0) beat Washington State in straight sets Wednesday night in a Pac-12 Conference volleyball opener in Seattle.

Set scores were 25-21, 25-18, 22-15. Kyra Holt and Chelsey Bettinson had nine kills each to lead the Cougars (9-4). Kate Sommer had 15 digs and Haley McDonald had 26 assists.

• Whitworth rallied for a 3-2 victory over Whitman in Spokane for the Pirates’ first Northwest Conference victory of the season. Set scores were 20-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-23, 15-9. Nicole Leonard led Whitworth (8-4, 1-2 NWC) with 19 kills – 10 in the final two sets.

• Community Colleges of Spokane (15-8) swept Eastern Utah in nonconference play at Spokane Falls CC, winning 25-23, 25-16, 25-19.

Women’s soccer

Jaimee Hulst scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the first half, and Ely Priddy scored on a corner kick in the second half as North Idaho College (4-0-5, 3-0-5 NWAC) beat Yakima Valley Community College 2-0 in Coeur d’Alene.

• Serena Robertson scored in the 68th minute to help Community Colleges of Spokane (9-2-1, 6-1-1 NWAC) play to a 1-1 draw at Walla Walla.

Men’s soccer

Devin Leon and Jonathan Cruz scored second-half goals for Community Colleges of Spokane (7-4-0, 5-2-0 NWAC), but the Sasquatch’s rally fell short in a 3-2 loss at Walla Walla.

Women’s basketball

Gonzaga will kick off the Lisa Fortier era on Oct. 18 with Fan Fest at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

The fifth annual event is free and doors will open at 3 p.m. for the 4 p.m. Blue-White Scrimmage.

Fortier, a nine-year assistant, was hired after Kelly Graves left to coach Oregon. She inherits a team that has won 10 straight West Coast Conference championships and has made six consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament.
